How much would you pay for HID?

The more important question is how long the capsules will last for. Just because you bought a "Hella Kit" or "Philips Kit" does not necessarliy mean you got a quality HID Capsule.
There are tons of generic stuff out there that can go out within a year! A quality HID capsule should last a VERY long time.
There are many different ballast designs out there... the older style Philips/Hella use a one piece design with an integrated igniter. Fine for OEM applications.. but for aftermarket, not so good.
The ones UMNitza are describing have a seperate igniter. This prevents arcing and enables quicker warm up and restrike. Philips is actually moving towards this direction with their new OEM units. They all have a seperate igniter from the ballast, usually on the base of the HID capsule.
A lot of aftermarket kits that use Philips or Hella ballasts have issues with HID capsules flickering, turning on/off, or discloring... one cause of this is that the ballast cannot touch metal or it is subject to arcing.

Speaking of which.
One guy that I know was on his 3rd Philips ballast in 5 years. When he saw the separate igniter and ballast design, he sold his the next week and moved on
