uhhh... maybe you need to learn how to drive it. I've had SMGII in my old E46 M3 and I have SMGIII in my M5 and it's not bad at all, I actually love it. I've had a car with SMG for the past five years and have had extensive experience driving them in LOTS of traffic in LA and on the track. SMG is great and if you've driven an M3 with M-DCT, it's even better.

I just love the overly biased comments from people that have barely gotten any seat time in the cars, have never owned one and wouldn't know the first thing to do if they were on a track.

I belive the HPFP issue was mainly concentrated with the 335i's and didn't affect the M3.

hpfp is for the 335's for whoever decided to make that statement.

OP, if you've never driven an e46 M3 then you will truly enjoy the e92. Also, come join us over at www.m3forum.net for some awesome guys and awesome advice and knowledge. I'm Mlover4life over there so you wont miss me

To whoever said the M3 will be expensive has obviously not heard of the 4yr/50k mile FREE maintenance.

In comparison, the C230 is a great DD compared to the e46 mainly because of the service inspection I and II, thats what rings the wallets. No more valve adjustments on the e92 since they've been given hydraulic valves and the engine is literally bulletproof so if op maintains the car over the years he'll be perfectly fine

I just sold the ML two weeks ago.

I picked up a Camry Hybrid this past weekend...

Sad to see the C350 go. It was such a clean car. But you get an M3 in its place!

lol yeah! Same with the ML. The lady that bought it from us was crazy about it after seeing it and driving it. She was so afraid that we would sell it after she would leave so she tried to find anything she could at the time to leave as a deposit.

Did you consider the factory pickup of the M in Munich? It's pretty sweet...I was looking into this as I was considering the 135i a while back. They (BMW) mostly pay for your trip over there, and you get to drive your car out of the factory, and BMW helps you "break it in."

If I ever get an M, I think that's what I'll do.

I called my buddy with one and he said the trannys straight up **** for anything but beating on it, sorry IMO M5 SMG are a big stinking pile of crap, if they wherent then why did BMW offer a manual again? Because people hated the stupid SMG it was **** poor for anything but beating the bejesus out of the car, of which then it was super, but since like almost well any M5 owner, the car never sees a track and hence has an aweful freaking time behaving normal in a non performance stop and go environment. The car has no damn clutch so I dont need to learn how to drive, the stupid car needs a better tranny.

Its sad when in stop and go traffic I cant move because the clutch says its overheated because its gay and doesn't let it in and out fast enough to inch forward in traffic. I adjusted the shift veracity and all sorts of crap, it still sucked.

People complain about the same thing in the quatroporte that the flappy paddle (as i hear them called) gear box is not geared for the daily driving these cars see. Unfortunately much like SUVs, performance cars never leave suburbia and rarely if ever encounter a track unless they just went over a railroad crossing.

The SMG is not a stick shift, but it shifts faster than humanly possible. For the track, I would love it. I drove my friend's E46 M3 with (SMG II - I believe?) and it was amazing.
To says it's "**** poor for anything but beating on a car" is quite a stretch...It may not be what you prefer, but there is a reason all of the highest performance automakers are shifting (pun intended) to sequential manual setups.

Drive the SMG in that particular M5 and you would hate SMG, I like DSG and I love the new M3 gear box, however the M5s to me will always make that car one id never want to own because of it, Give me a 6 speed and a clutch pedal, I dont care if I can get there fastest I just wanna know I can be more involved with the car, pushing a paddle is nothing like the feeling of feathering a clutch or shifting gears. I love manuals, I dont mind SMGs and DSGs but I hate autos, but I still say the 06 M5 DSG is not good for anything but hard performance, and since I wasn't tracking it the entire month the car suffers greatly in my evaluation, a car like a 4 door 5 series still needs to be live with able on a road and not just a track, why doesn't any one drive a tank? Because its not tolerable on a normal road, other wise why wouldn't we all have one, a car that does only 1 thing good is a useless device.
