Unencumbered by its idiotic litigation leash, the C-Coupe can hit 148 or 149. IIRC MB quotes 149 in its own documentation. Certainly doesn't seem like a slow car anymore, does it?

Well, with the C models in question being fitted as standard with HR (210 km/h) tires, it's not actually an idiot leash at all. Even in Europe this car would be required to have a speed limiter if it came with HR tires over there. But they don't.
Apparently Europeans don't mind replacing tires that wear out every 25,000 km, in exchange for the ability to achieve those last 30 km/h in top speed.
All of which does not adequately explain why the C Class cars (excepting the C 32) equipped with the VR rated tires in North America don't have the speed limiter removed. Economy of scale in production, I suppose, would be the excuse.
And yes, the C 230 K (both M111 and M271-powered) top out at 240 km/h if unrestricted, which is a tick over 149 MPH.

so the 2003 sedan does top out at 130. ok... then i was hallucinating. I could have sworn that i got it up to low 130's other night. That's why i asked because I was suprised...... i will check again this weekend when i drive back down and pay close attention again.

According to the speedo on my 2003 the limiter is at 134 MPH on mine. Which could be speedo error or just random limiter settings. My wife hit 135 when she noticed the speed after the limiter. She did not have the digital display on at the time so she went by the needle.
