Dave's Coupe Sunroof Thread

thanks,
Herbie
You need to get the factory MB tool to close the SR, or the proper allen wrench.
Remove the light assy where the SR switch is and use the tool, or try pushing up on the motors.
There are 2, drivers side SR, passenger side Shade.
I was able to close the shade using a torx T20 or T25 i dont really remember the exact size. However, I pushed on the driver side to close the shade. is something wrong with it? Thank you very much for the help.

We drove the car someplace Saturday morning and it was fine. On the way back, there was wind noice. I found a loose spring about 4" long on the passenger side at the front of the sunroof track area. I removed it, and the roof closes better, with less noice. The roof only opens about 5". Any ideas on the problem? Where does the spring go? Is there a link to diagrams of the mechanism?

So I decided to replace BOTH SIDE RAILS WITH THE CABLES.
My cost from the dealer for these parts was $280. a side, they list for $350. a side at your local friendly MB Dealer...
First I have to say thanks to Todd, AKA C230 Sport Coup!!!
I have the factory MB Repair CD, but have never been able to get it to work on my computer. Todd graciously provided all the pdf files that I have posted here...
Also I did not remove the whole headliner, i just disconnected everything except the back and let it hang down on the seat headrests.
The first thing you need to do is get the glass out - this was a PITA as the sunroof needs to be open to get at all the bolts.
The left side would open some, so just remove the rubber bellows and start taking out all the #20 Torx bolts with the washers on them, 6-on each side for a total of 12 and the glass just lifts off.
Take all the bolts off the side that opens, then on the side that won't open just take out whatever bolts that you can get and the more you take out you will finally be able to get all the bolts out.
Next remove the Sunshades- they are a PITA to unclip, I got the front clipped, used some needle nose vise grips to hold the spring tension.
The back sunshade I could not get un-clipped, so I took the roller out of the track, put a tye wrap on it, and then took it out of the clips when I had loosened up both the rails before I removed the rails from the car.
Then just unscrew all the #20 Torx bolts that hold the rails in, make sure you have already removed both the drive motors, and the #20Torx bolts that hold the Guide Tube and remove the whole assembly from the passenger side door.

Used Guide Rails for sale here -
https://mbworld.org/forums/exterior-...ide-rails.html
The Guide Tube is about $240. from the dealer, and I was able to change it in the car without removing the Guide Rails.
Sunroof works great again....4 now
Picture 1 shows the damage from the slipping gear -
Picture 2 shows what an un-damaged Guide Tube should look like -

The Pano Sunroof is such a nice feature, but not dealer friendly for repairs.
Glad you were able to do the job yourself.
Didn't I send you like 10-20 files?
None of the other ones applied?

Ya, I need to post some of the other one's.
It's a pain with the pictures as you have to reduce them.

I'm in desperate need of help. I'm trying very hard to understand what the instructions here are but I just cant get it down. Might have something to do with me being a woman lol..
anyhow, does any of you know anyone here in northern california who can help me out with this kind of stuff for a fee? also, aside from the panoramic roof, I suspect that my radio antenna is not working because I hardly get any reception, and the key fob does not work (not sure if those are related). and just recently, my rear deforster does not seem to be working, although the light on the button goes on when i press it.
please let me know if you can recommend someone or somewhere that's not a dealer.
many thanks!
Metallic tint mess up key fob,....
As for local help,.... I nominate Todd, my favourite Cali-boy!

Yeah, if your radio reception and defroster are both not working, probably a connection issue at the bottom of the hatch glass, I'd guess.

The sunshade now does not work. Any suggestions on how to get it working? Is it due to the lousy rubber bushings? I loosened the two screws I can reach with the headliner in place and tried moving the motor and gearbox assembly with one hand while operating the switch, but it just clatters.
As I understand it, the left motor is for the glass, and the right motor is for the shade. Is that correct. I strengthened the left gearbox with a modified wire box cover.
Tip: The rear view mirror just pulls off, but there is a trick to putting the rear view mirror back on. There is a thing springy wire on one of the big spring on the mount. push that wire so that one of the flattened conical end bumps is pulled in slightly.
The worse part of all of this is that we would have gladly paid $1,000 more for the car to have better parts. I fully understand price elasticity, but it is a jagged curve, not a smooth one, so I doubt a slight price increase and much better parts would have cost them any sales. In the long run, it would generate more sales, as the cars would indeed be considered "Engineered Like Not Other Car In the World." As is, my 206 Ford Explorer with 159,000 miles has been far more reliable the our 63,000 miles C230K, both bought new.

If the Left Glass motor is skipping and will not fully stop after the roof is closed, the Right Sunshade motor will not operate.

Mirror just pops back on, but they can be difficult.

For my sons 17th (next month) I decided to gift him my C230K - and low and behold Pano had been dead since the 10K mile mark. Which happens to be completely my fault as I had 8,000 watts pounding the guts of this thing into oblivion.
Anyway, I decided to bring it back from the dead and the Pano was the first thing that needed to be replaced. So after 2 weekends of following - and in some cases re following your instructions I was able to replace the glass / motors/ tracks/ headliner ect. and fix the Pano good as new.
So a MAJOR THANK YOU you guys Fkn Rock!!!!
I know MB sells the lubrications and grease for the job, but what was the consensus on the 3rd party lubes and grease we could use?

From my reading, I heard Krytox GPL 105 grease is good - is that the one for hte guide rail?
What grease do you recommend for the outerlining, shift gate, pivot arm, wind deflector etc?

Green, you can buy the grease (perhaps) as did from
buymbparts.com for $12 in 2008 for a film canister's worth, instead of the huge container, and yes, Krytox for the other areas. I managed to get the actual mb branded stuff on ebay for $25 once...more than I could ever use.
The pdf details where to put each, and the only other thing is I use
303 Protectant to keep the rubber from sticking to the glass, which puts strain on the motor and the cheesy plastic gear, which causes lots of problems.
I would contact buymbparts.com and ask if they still sell the grease in the small containers. Not likely you'll find it on the site.
Doing this regularly, once a year or so , seems to have helped me avoid any problems, though my entire sunroof was replaced twice under warranty, and I have an updated version.
Is that normal? Are both the sunshade and glass powered by 1 motor?
Because I've read some posts that said they had a second motor on the left for the actual glass to move.
I also pulled out fuse 9 in the trunk (put it back in ofc) and tried resyncing, after I ''resync'' that sunshade stops working as well. Then I pull out fuse 9 and put it in again and it works again. But the actual panoramic sunroof never works.
As you can see on the attached picture it seems that my left motor was removed somehow?

Hi Bro,
You definitely missed one motor on left hand side, should have same one as right hand side. I opened my clk200 today, two motors there.
