2.3 SLK engine Vs. C230K engine
Hi all,
I test drove a SLK today! The engine drove differently (aka more torque) than my C-coupe. Isn't it the same engine. Anyone know why?
Sweet car btw (my friend called me craxy for getting another Benz, he just doesn't understand
)

i have both...and the SLK feel faster for sure...well..before i had my pulley on the coupe.
And yes, it is the same engine. In fact, when i was looking at the coupe, and after i know it is that engine, i didnt even bother really testing it

if you buy one you can get a used one pretty good for 25K

Different engine I believe, also SLK is a little lighter. You will notice also that as with all Kompressor engines the peak hp and torque are at higher revs, so the SLK should feel quicker at lower revs. (I believe, I'm not a pro)
2003 SLK230:
2.3L 16-valve inline-4 engine
192 hp @ 5,500 rpm
200 lb-ft @ 2,500 - 5,000 rpm
3,110 lb
0-60 mph 7.0 seconds (automatic)
slightly higher compression 9.0:1
same tires 205/55R16

Also having both a Coupe and SLK (and driving an 02 coupe before) I can say that the SLK is significantly faster. One thing I like about the SLK is that even with the top down the back is very light, your able to slide into turns very easily.

SLK230 is a very nice car. In the JD Powers 5 year dependebility survey the SLK made the top of the list for sports car reliabilty despite MB's poor turnout. My wife and I looked into it but with the C-coupe resale market depressed I figure we would wait. In 2005 the new R171 SLK is coming out but it's ugly in my opinion, at least the preview photos are. I know it's pricy compared to the coupe but you can probably get a large chunk off or get a private party used one for possibly $30k for a very clean low mileage 2001 or 2002. It is lighter by a bunch but to me, because the coupe has rack and pinion steering and the SLK doesn't steering feels a little less precise. The SLK does have a more solid MB feel to it though and is a little faster, comperable to a C320.

Thanks for your help. This was really kewl. You know the guy at the dealership could not really talk to me about the engine difference and thought I was more interested in color. Geezzz!
Magic words!!!! Hooray! My best friend here just balled me out last night for even thinking about another German car after two lemons, but I love the SLK.
Buellie, where do I get a copy of that report and do they break down relibility by model year?
