Ticking noise???

Hi guys,

Could you please let me know whether the ticking noise (on and off) coming from the engine is normal for the 2001 C240?

Your assistance is greatly appreciated!

Thanks

I've had many, many C240 loaners (I think I'm up to 19 loaners since I got my '02 Coupe) and I never heard any ticking.

almost every MB has that tickling noise coming from under the engine. i know it's annoying, but it won't cause anything. So don't worry, unless it's really loud.

i think there is, but i don't know how. I just don't bother with it. Search around the forum, maybe you'll find it.

Two possiblities

Not so sure I know WHICH ticking sound you mean, since the C-class has so damn many of them. Two possiblities come to mind (and yes, these are posted on the forum.) I happen to have had both problems on my C320:

1) If it's on start only, probably the lifters.
2) If it's on COLD start, could be the purge valve. They can replace it with a new assembly which should take care of the problem.

Currently have my car in for #1 problem, #2 done on last visit. Good luck!

The C230 makes a lot of noise on cold start because of the supercharger preheat for the catalyst. Its an emmissions thing.

I find it hard to believe that you got lifter problems- not because its impossible- rather that a collapsed lifter will make more than just a tick tick noise.

Hmm, who knows...

Outland- lifters wouldn't have occured to me, but had two service advisors and the shop foreman make that conjecture. Just got a voice mail they're waiting on a parts delivery from Germany, but haven't been able to get a live body to find out what the actual diagnosis was or which problem they're referring to. (Considering I save up my complaints and have them all done at once. ha!)

5/3/03 - Got the car back: 3 collapsed lifters. Wasn't causing a tick, but rather a knock, though for some reason everyone kept calling it a "ticking sound." Sounds great, runs great now. Post when you get your problem straightened out, rs389, I'm curious.
