Thump noises from rear of car

Thump noises from rear of car
2003 C230K Sport Sedan. When stopped at a light with clutch firmly pressed and car in gear ( ready to go 
position ). I hear a loud thump thump thump noise from the trunk or thereabouts. First time it happened I thought there was a car with really big subwoofers behind me. But it has happened 3 more times since then. Any idea what that may be?

p.s. I already have an appt on the 12th to have that, the tramlining and the burned oil smell looked at.

PS: It doesn't sound like you're moving when it happens; otherwise, I'd say it was the diff or something in the rear suspension.

Avlis,I don't know. Does that sound like a THUMP?
My noise sounds as if someone was trying to kick the trunk lid open from the inside. ( No jokes please ).

I think if it were the ESP, which acts through the brakes, you would probably feel it when moving more than hear it when stopped. Unless it's doing something strange like locking a rear wheel when stopped, if this were the case I think you might feel the ABS pulse through the brake pedal.
The gas tank is beneath the rear seats, it could be a noisy pump/fuel sender, but I think if it were making that much noise you would have most likely experienced some kind of performance issue. But maybe not.

trench, ESP is weird
My driveway is about 30 degrees steep so when I make a right onto it, my fron wheels go up first ( right first, then left ) and for some reason I cannot explain I hear ESP doing something with the rear wheels. I don't feel anything in the brake pedal when it does that. The thumping noise I hear when stopped is more subdued than the ESP noise when I try to go up driveway though. It sounds muffled and it seems as if it's coming from another car that has really big subwoofers and rap blasting....

I think you need to check your trunk to make sure there's no one in there. And then you need to teach them about the green release button so they can get out the next time.
But other than that, I can't think of anything that would make a sound like that. If it keeps doing it, I would try to get an appointment for service sooner than the 12th.

me too!!!
I have the same noise in my car...it's only when stopped. I thought maybe my foot wasn't on the brake enough so tried to push down harder on the pedal and still have the same noise...bugs the crap out of me but haven't gone to the dealer. let me know what they think it is cause it would be good to know.

unplug your subwoofers! jk. My father has the same noise in his e320 4matic. I you guys do find out whats up, post it here so I can read what's going on and look for the same with his car....

I have Bose but my stereo was off when the thumping happened
Still, another possibility that has to be investigated but if Chrissy's car does not have Bose that means that there is some other Gremlin that's causing thr thumping.....

I get this too, usually when it is warm and I have been driving a little hard.
I always thought that is was fuel/gases being burned off by the cat or muffler. Sorta like little baby backfires. putt putt putt, silence, putt putt putt putt

Couln't this be exhaust expanding/contracting? Many cars start emitting this sort of sound after engine shut-off as a result of cat/exhaust thermal contraction. Could be something of this nature. Ever noticed that the exhaust tip sticks out more when the engine is warm?

at least if i was in the mob then i would know what the noise was...but am not so don't know...no bose and only happens when driving, not when car is turned off...i still say it's aliens

rrf, does it say anything about the Bose having to be on for the noise to occur?
Also, my car is an 03 so you would think that they would have already installed the updated amp.

I am in the VIN band for the rear axle rumbling. I wonder if that is the rotation rumbling I am hearing lately that varies according to speed?
Need more info.

Trying to revive this thread so I may get some answers
The dealer said they could not reproduce but this happens each morning after a 10 mile Highway trip at 75-80mph. Once I get to the exit and stop at the light I hear pop,pop,pop,silence,pop,pop,pop from the back of the car...

don't know why people think it is bose. it seems to come from the back bottom of the car, near the wheels or something. thought the spare wheel was loose so i removed it and drove around but the sound is still there.
