COMAND or Aftermarket Nav with DVD?

Hi,

Can someone please outline the major differences between

US-Spec Comand, Euro-Spec Comand and aftermarket one (Kenwood, Alpine or Pioneer one that comes with DVD player)

thanks..

US comand and euro comand diff is that euro comand has a tv input but I (think) it won't let u watch tv when u drive over 40 mile, Euro comand has digital signal thing which when ur in FM it tells u what station ur in and sometime what song are they playing... depends on what signal the radition station sends out... other then that is very much the same.. (correct me if I am wrong)

kenwood, alpine and pioneer... they are DVD map system so with just one dvd u can go from state to state with out changeing the dvd, kenwood is the only one that has touch screen funtion, pioneer has a funtion which u enter the bussiness phone # and it pull out the address in the data base so u don't have to type the address... other then that they pretty much offer the same.. just look diff oh yeah and pioneer offers voice control so u can voice control some basic funtion

The diff from command and dvd after market nav is that dvd offers a penny to penny error, so which means that on the map ur error is just about 1 penny away.. but with command i think is about 1 car or 2 away and dvd is faster... some time u miss the exit cause u drive too fast haha..

Anyway but I chouse to go with command system because
1. after market dvd if u install then it will kill some warrantee (the computer, and anything u touch)
2. Looks clean with original.
3. Steve here at this bord give hella deal.. command + install for just 1300, with after market dvd system the dvd system it self is about 1k or more...

thanks a lot Blueice!

have more questions:
so, you cannot give any voice control to the Comand? (correct me if i am wrong)

also, what point of interest feature that Comand has?

hmm..the only thing that's holding me to get the Comand (US one) is that after you purchase it, it will only function as nav system and down the road you cannot play tv or dvd unlike the aftermarket one (or Euro Comand plus few more $$)

let me know your thought
thanks

I did not have a nac cd yet haah so I can't tell u on that.. and i am sure theres no voice command funtion u can go with command pioneer is the only one has that funtion and they don't work so great..

Yeah I think thats the only down side on command u can't watch tv and souch, even with euro comand the tv funtion will not work when u drive over 40 miles for safty reason they have that turn off.. but for me the command fits really good if U go after market the rool up screen will block up the stereo system

let me confirm,

so eventhough Steve could make the TV or DVD ON after a brief stop (OFF) at 5mph --> it will turn OFF again at speed above 40 mph?

if so, we can watch the tv or dvd only at speed between 5-40 mph?

The Euro comand screen turns off automatically after 5mph (not 40mph). Steve cannot change it unless the unit is shipped to germany for reprogramming.

The TV will turn off if you’re traveling more than 5mph not at 40mph, this is what happened to my other car, luckily I was able to get my salesman to make the TV on all the time

let me get it straight:

other than small stuffs (showing radio station name, song name), the only difference between US and Euro Specs is when it's parked (if I buy TV tuner or add DVD). Otherwise the two is exactly the same unless it's modified to be ON all the time (eventhough cruising).

correct me again if I did not get it correctly

thanks

The AM band on the Euro COMAND stops at 1600Khz and the station spacing is 9Khz instead of 10Khz so some AM stations won't be received properly. The Euro COMAND has a useless long wave band instead of the weather band.

The voice has an English accent and distances are given in yards instead of feet. There are several other minor differences.

Not entirely true...the US comand still has a hidden TV supporting feature which can be activated (if your dealership has lots of goodwill).

The biggest differenec between the comand and any aftermarket nav system is that it blends in whith the dash...it fits in there and it connects to whatever audiorelated feature is already installed in the car (even with voicecontrol (linguatronic) when it is already installed).

Steve,

do I have to purchase the linguatronic separately? How much does it cost? did you refer this as something that I can use to talk to the nav system (similar to acura's nav?)

thanks

Pioneer's allows you to watch a DVD movie using the system (however you can't watch and navi at the same time). Pioneer also allows you to add on a DVD player and use it since the Navi system gives you more then one RGB input.

Yup that's about the only difference that's worthwhile for me anyways (which is why I got it). Functional-wise, you will find the current Comand system to be pretty outdated in its features (no dvd, no voice activation, no touch screen, etc etc etc).

The biggest let down (my personal opinion) about Comand is that when you are using Nav, it won't show you the surrounding streets name

I agree. Also here are some more:

- can't get the woman to shut the hell up. can turn down volume but still it mutes your music when she tries to give you directions. she disrupts my audio listening so much that often i just shut off the nav completely and say screw it to the directions.
- takes wayyyyy too long to load up maps and routes.

yeah the reaction on map and ur car is kinda slow so if u drive fast u can alrady made a left turn and u hear the woman goes turn left next 300 feet... or something like that ahah.. if u want funtion go for after market theres alot more u can do with it.. add a back up cam so u can see when ur backing up, add a dvd player etc.. but I still like the clean look of command.. =)

Can u just lower the voice of the woman? I try to do that but it won't work

Yeah push the volume knob in till it clicks, then turn left to lower her voice.

But that doesn't do any good though. Every time she speaks your audio gets muted anyways.

oggle, it sound like you need a manual...I have 3 euro spec W203 manuals left here in the states...you can adjust the voice in every possible way and can stop the audiomute and can even mute her voice.

When driving like a maniac at highspeeds, most navi systems are too late with finishing their sentence...that is not a comand specific flaw...
