+1 and even with my OEM US C32 suspension it still had a gap. there's absolutely no contact with the rubber stop below when it is static. the the gap does not increase in any suspension setup that i had when the shock is compressing.
the plate is there to prevent strut fall off. not there to tighten it.
if you see the plate travel up&down as the suspension compress/decompress then like i've said something's wrong with your install or something was not install properly.
the hat&bearing once tighten down will not move up and down AND the compression of the shock does not affect the distance between the hat&bearing to the very top of the strut where the plate is tighten down.
and feel free to look at the plate at the top as you turn the steering wheel at the same time. it will swivel foward & backward depends on which way the steering turns.

My stock 01 c320 also has the gap i was able to get a quarter into the gap easily and have a pic for you all. Also the top does move when you turn the wheels and mine did not have any signs of contact ever after almost 155k lol btw the car is at my indy about to get the rentech struts put on finally.
