Need windshield replacement. How much from dealer? alternates?

I had small rock chip on mine about 5 months ago (less than 1 square inch area, spider-web-style). I took it for repair, cost about $20 (or u provide insurance info they do for free), they did a fill-in and some of the blemish went away, didnt effect the look much and it was small so i was pretty happy (supposedly sealed).

then last week, weather in TX got real nice and hot (~95F), left car parked outside 8 hrs, came back....it spreaded to about 8-10in!!! ARRRGGGHHH....Now I need a new windshield. anyone know how much? alternate to dealer? I know insurance pay for it (had similar on my A4). I would like to know how much some of u guys paid at dealer or alternate brand/shop? I am in Houston, TX BTW. Thanks.

Windshield Repair

TB,

I was in the Greenway shop a couple of months ago and I noticed the guy next to me at the cashiers was getting his windshield replaced. I told him I needed mine replaced since I have quite a few cracks too. He showed me the work order for $1400 for his S-Class. Ouch!

I'll keep going to the sticky glue guys on the side of the road for as long as I can.

You might pay at least $500 + labor.

When I change mine, I pay $475 + tax, they paid labor because it was some of their fault too.

If you have close to $500 deductable insurance, it is not worth to go thru the insurance, it will increase your premium.

And, I would go thru dealer to fix it. It might little cheap in 3rd party, but if anything goes wrong, I had a problem, dealer is responsible to fix it, and you can get a loaner and free donuts

Damn!!! if its $1400 (or even $800) I may just try to seal this and live with it for now until I gotta give back the car (lease). On my 99 audi a4 i think new glass and labor total was $600+ at the dealer. I heard its about $100-150 cheaper at 3rd Party. Now I heard there may not even be 3rd party for MB cars. If the quality is OEM i'll go with 3rd party depending on how much the dealer charges.....I was hoping to live with some blemishes till my lease is up, then fix up things.

I had mine fixed by insurance - I paid $50 or so. I went third party - it's still an mb windshield. Dealer wanted something ridiculous like $1200 or so, which insurance wouldn't cover.

Check with your insurance first. I had mine replaced over a year ago, and no problems (yes, it has the rain sensor).
