Question 230k he's cool/she's hot

Was driving in my 230k today with the wife and noticed that the dual climate control temp was not working the way I figured it would. Her side was set to warm, mine to cold, but both center dash vents were same temp.

Dialing passenger temp knob and waiting a few minutes made no difference. Only when passenger temp knob was cranked all the way to the right (clockwise) and hit a little detent 'bump', did it finally work.

Egg on my face as my bragging rights to better half were flagging.

Does 'auto' switch override different driver/passenger temp settings?

Normal operation or time for service visit?
