C230 K Panoroof SOLVED
Problem: That awful grinding noise and and the sunroof does not move...If this hasn't happened to you yet it will...dont panic
SOLUTION: Apparently most people think that it is the gear that should be replaced but in fact the gear is probably good if you haven't been trying to force it to work for too much. What actually happened is that the gear is held into place by some rubber washers, these rubber washers have worn down and so the gear drops down and can't make contact anymore.
SO what the guy did was replace them with some metal ones and presto: Sunroof is operational.
The Guys name is JACK DONNELLAN
Company is called:
Classic Designs
2545 Silver Star Road
Orlando FL 32804
407 293 3447
Good News: I drove from Orlando to gainesville with my top down and for most of the next day.
The guy only charged me for 2 hrs of labor at 89 and hr.
BAD NEWS: Unfortunately some of the mechanisms are plastic and have broken off. What exactly they do and why MB put them on a pano roof is mystery. I think more of them might of broken off and now I can only open the roof a few inches but it is fully operational for those few inches without any grinding noises. It is raining now but tomorrow I will take off the glass and see if any pieces got stuck in the track.
Any questions I will be glad to answer. Or if you have any suggestions let me know.
the roof is third party, and if the gears work like in the trans top del sols, they are plastic because they are suppose to be. They work like a fuse and break instead of forcing it and making more problems. But this may or may not be the case in this instance.
