SBC Brake by wire system

Hi Folks,
Can anybody tell me what years this system was used. I've read it was only on SL and E Class types but I couldn't find the year models.
I have been informed that I need an electronic lock out device to do brakes on one of these cars. It's 300 or so dollars that I don't want to spend on just a limited amount vehicles that might require it. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

It is NOT needed for C Class.
Yeah, it's needed for other ones.

Thanks. I read on the forum that it didn't affect our C230s. I also read there was a huge recall and Mercedes dropped the whole program like a hot rock. My question is what years were affected and possibly how many could even still be on the road with the original SBC system. I am still a mechanic and shop owner and see no reason to buy a tool to service maybe one or two of these cars in the next five years. Have all these cars been recalled and retrofitted? Thanks

I believe SBC was used on the R230 SL and the w211 E-class from 2003 to 2006 only. I don't believe MB is replacing those system in existing cars with a normal braking system.

Thank you so much. That's more or less what I thought. In my area (Northern California) I probably won't see one of these ever. The reason this came up at all was some parts company put a warning label on a set of pads for a C230 indicating the SBC tool was needed. As I found out here, that was completely wrong. I was curious at that point to find out what the real situation was. Thanks again.
