Heat Marks?

My C230K is in the shop because I was feeling a shuddering when applying the brakes hard. I thought it might be the rotors.

So I just got a call from the service centre and they say that the brakes have "heat marks" and this is causing the rotors to shudder, and it is also causing the brakes to squek.

The Service centre say the only fix is to replace the brakes, but it would not be under warranty. He says the pads have about 80% left on them.

This seems strange it would not be covered under warranty if the brakes are overheating.

I have also never heard of heat marks before. 99% of you know more about this kind of stuff than me so I would appreciate your feedback.

I have the same problem on my coupe. When you go to brake it jerks some while you are using the brakes. You can feel it in the pedal, passengers can feel it and if you take your hands off the wheel you can see it going from side to side. My car is an 02 with 8000 miles

Im having my rotors replaced in 2 weeks, hopefully that will fix it.

Just like to add that this car has never been driven hard before. Standard commute driving.

I think you should just get the C32 brake upgrade.

I want to keep the car stock until my warranty runs out. Although if this is not covered I will seriously question what the piont is.

mine is being done under warranty, if they try to tell me it isnt then I will just get a brembo kit.

If you look at my rotors you can see discolord wide spots on them.

The car has nearly 19k on it but still 80% of the pads. Does that sound like a car that has been driven hard?

Can I insist it is covered under warranty or should I take it somewhere else?

Take the car to another dealer. Each dealer's perspective on warranty coverage is slightly different.

To add to my point, my dealer even replaced a discolored roof rail under warranty!

Stealer left me a message and said heat marks are normal and to be expected, therefore he suggest I pick up the car.

He said that the rotors are slightly warped and that they can only replace them but it will not be under warranty.

Can they not even turn the rotors? I guess I will be collecting this afternoon and take it back to my regular service centre. I have been going to the Belmont place, but it is far away. Guess it is worth the trip.

Warranty on brakes is usually 1 year.

At least on my BMW it was.

After doing a search on the board for brakes and warranty, it appears that brake pads are considered wear and tear items. Audi and BMW both offer better warranties for Brakes.

Although I do not know if rotors are covered under the warranty?

If the rotors are wrapped I would think you have a warranty case. Maybe your stealer is looking for the extra bonus he gets by keeping warranty cost down.

Brake pads and rotors are wear and tear but are covered for the first 12 months 12,000 miles. As they should last longer than that. BMW and Audi seem to be the only two manufacturers I have ever heard of with a brake warranty. Every other manufacturer follows the 12/12 policy and that is all you get. Just like your tires....

For the record, my dad's VW Golf's brake pads were replaced under warranty after 1.5 years due to abnormal wear.

Just goes to show how effective forums are. Getting feedback from other peoples experiences empowers us with the knowledge to know when and how to push.
