Manually crank/close Sunroof....

Hello, i own a 2004 Mercedes Benz c240 four door Sedan. I tried searching for this topic but resulted in no threads.

I was looking for any helpful tips on how to manually close/crank the sunroof. It will not close, being stuck at about 4 inches from closed position. When you try to open it it will move back and forward for about 1 inch at a time.

Any additional diagnostic tips are welcome, but as of now i am just trying to close it shut so i avoid rain damage.

I will try to gradually work on fixing it.
Thanks in advance...!!

Located and tried to manual crank the sunroof shut. It does not close manually either!!! While turning the lever provided by the factory, it seems to be spinning and not being able to grab anything to pull the sunroof towards closing.

I may add that while turning manually/ pushing button electronically you hear a grinding/knocking noise like gears slipping when its going on the closing direction.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. I was finally able to close it while pushing on each side towards closing (2 men operation). I noticed that the track was driving the glass a little crooked when getting close to being closed.

My guess is that i have issues with the track as well. I pulled the motor off and it still works at one inch interval when you push open-button but works continuosly when push close-button. Again, my basic mechanical knowledge tells me that the motor has issues as well.

At least i have it closed now to prevent rain/burglary damage.

For others out there with the same problems, expect these costs:
  1. I was quoted $461 new for the motor at the MB dealer. Found a (just one) used one online (eBay) for about $80.
  2. Did not even bother asking for a quote on the whole track assembly, i know its gonna be ridiculous. On eBay theres a listing for $350 for a used track as well.
I wonder wether you could just replace the cable/track without having to replace the whole assembly. Anyone with expertise, please share your input....

Thx!!
