I do not recommend Sumitomo. I had a set of rears go out 10K miles. I have Continental DWS now and I'm really happy with them. They are not expensive and they've worn well (a whole lot better than the Sumitomos) and performed well so far (almost 10K by now).

My favorite regardless of price is the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S. I picked up a set of wheels with some Dunlop DZ101's that still had tread left on them and was happily surprised with them, so went that route this last time I needed tires and saved ~$300. The Dunop's aren't as grippy in the wet as the Michelin's, but I live in a dry area and hardly see rain. Plus saving the $300 made wifey a happy gal this time. I've personally never had good luck with Continental tires, but I've never tried a set of the DWS which seem to get good reviews.
Remember a more grippy tire will almost always wear out faster then a higher mileage/less grippy tire, so you need to decide where you want to be in that tradeoff mix.

if you are on a budget and drive a bit more relaxed try the Yokahama Avid Envigor. I pot them on last spring and am very happy with them. quiet and great in rain or dry.

I have conti pro contacts on my stock (winter) wheels and they are not bad, but I love my pirellis on my summer rims, nice grip, not too much wear so far. but I got a set at like 600 when I bought my rims, I think they normally go for closer to 900. I probably will go with the conti pros next time.

Im just curious for those that dont live in snow region, why are you even buying all-season tires like the DWS?
Im asking because if you dont get snow, any max performance summer tires tend to have work better in rain as well as in dry.
And LOL at the generalization of Sumitomo. The new HTRZIII is On par with any tire that cost twice or three time as much.
As far as recommending tires to OP, without how he drives, size of the tire he is looking for, location, weather, how do people even come up with a suggestion?
I'm just gonna spitball this out there; Michelin PilotSport2

While this is true any set of max performance summer tires I've run have all gone bald in under 10 k miles. You are correct though the traction in all other conditions is insane. My DWS are still kicking so far 30k later.

after 2 summers of light driving, lots of treadwear. rather dissapointed. Consumer reports has good ratings for all except treadwear. Oh well...

I used Sumitomo HTR ZIII XLs on the rear at 41400 miles and they had to be replaced at about 50000 miles. I don't think they were completely worn out so they may have made it another 10000 miles, but they were pretty much gone. I replaced them with slightly used DWSs. I'm at about 71000 and now they need to be replaced. I do not drive them hard (though I do step on it every now and then). I am not happy with the life of my rear tires - the front tires last a lot longer.
Maybe some of you who have suggested certain tires can put some mileage numbers to them...
