What should I do about this?

I noticed a few days ago that my engine is looking a bit weird.

First, the intake tube seems to be very dirty. Its mostly sand. I am not sure why, since I live in New Jersey. The car is a few months old, but has 12,000 miles already. See 1st pic.

Next, the engine cover seems to be burnt....see pic 2.

Do I try and clean these two?
With what?
Is this something covered under a service?

Thanks,
Erik

Looks like an oil stain on the cam cover.

I agree, but the funny thing is it just appeared recently....well after my oil changed...and I didn't have anything like that near the engine since.

They probably got a couple oil drops on the cover and wiped it off. It left a thin, almost colorless residue that collected dirt over time and that is what you see.

Thanks to both of you. I am going to complain since they are the only ones to touch my engine and have them clean or replace it.

What should I do about the intake sand? Clean it, vacum?

Excuse my blunt-ness but, why do you have to complain to the dealer about dirt on your valve cover? Can't you just get a paper towel and clean it yourself?

I tried, it won't come off...I used water, light soap, and an armor all removing product...nothing works...thats why I thought it was burnt.

I had the same issue when i took my car to dealer for the low-oil add 1 qt thing. the seemed to have some spill on top of the valve cover, i tried wiping it off with just damp paper towel but wont come off. didnt think much b/c i figure i can use something else to clean it (chemical?). Oh mine's better, I found out one of the metal both that goes on one of my headlight housing is missing! My dealer ppl are idiots but there are only 2 here in town and one is like 40-50min away. Luckily there will be a new one much closer to my side of town next month...cant wait! more competition the better.....

AVLIS.........Why shouldn't he complain.......I am sure he is capable of cleaning it himself......but that is not the point.

I never put up with that kind of crap from my Ford or Pontiac or Chryslers dealers and I'm certainly not putting up with it from a Mercedes dealer. I keep my cars immaculate......I never take a dirty car into the dealer for service of any kind. I expect the car to be returned to me in exactly the same condition as when they received it. And I always do a walk around with the service advisor before I hand him the keys. Its called CYOA. There will be no question about any damage done to the car.

On a recent routine service visit with my E, it came back with the door panel and scuff plate had black heel marks all over them.....I made them take the car to the detail shop and clean it. I hold them accountable for my car while it is in their posession. I didn't buy a $62000 car to let the dealer screw it up or treat it anyway they like.

Now if you don't mind cleaning up after the dealer, I say fine, I don't have a problem with that. But I don't think you have the right to tell someone else that they should do the same. Maybe, just maybe, if everyone held the dealer accountable they would start to be more careful.

I understand both points. I am not a baby...if it takes water and paper towel and 2 mins of my life I will do it (specially since it takes 45 mins each way to my dealer)...in my case I tried the basic stuff and it doesn't help...I figured I'd ask if people knew a way to clean it...its nothing major, just annoying on a brand new car. I will stop by next week and let the board know what they do.

I'd still like to know about the intake though...

It's just dust, sand and crap that's attached to the intake tube.

Simple Green (cleaner) and a garden hose.

no need to
