Coolant Temp Guage

Has anyone noticed that the coolant temp guage reads in Celcius while the ambient temp reads in Fahrenheit? It looks me like the MB programers aren't up to par with their engineers.

Yeah, it seems like it should be switchable, or follow standard English/Metric settings.

I think this is a carry-over from the previous analog guages. I had a 99 C230K loaner that had the analog coolant temp in celcius. The outside temp read in Fahrenheit.

BTW: this loaner had 78,000 miles and felt as tight as my 02 with 1500 miles. The old interior styling is horrible though.

I believe the ambient temp can be switched between F and C.

Correct Lynn, you can change between F and C for ambient temp, as well as you can change between mi/h and km/h for the digital speedo. This make me think it's kinda strange that there is no way to change the engine coolant scale...

By the way, am I the only one who immediately after start switches the MFD to show the coolant-temp, driving very, very gently until it reaches somewhere close to 90C??

Well, mine is a lease. I hate to admit it, but I just wait for that nasty rumbling to go away, then I mash the gas..... Gee, thank god for the warranty....

The 190 coolant temperature guage shows the collant temperature only in Celsius. This is obviously a carry-over from older models.

I too wait for a normal operating temperature to be reached. Man.. I wish I had a real guage that showed oil temperature!

Guess we have to go aftermarket to get one of those. I can picture it in front of me... a big round oil-temp guage with it's housing on top of the steering-column

Actually... it might be easier to mount it right to the hood like the old "muscle cars"!

PLEASE LISTEN!!

Uunderstand that the engine coolant temperature bears no relationship to the most important factor, the engine oil temperature.
I installed oil temperature gauges on my 911 Turbos and NSXs as part of the extensive modifications made to these cars. Thus, I was able to correlate engine coolant and oil pressure/temperature responses during warm-up.
After startup, I permitted the cars to idle until the "cold-start" program terminated, the engine coolant temperature began to respond and the oil pressure stabilized. This usually required 1-3 minutes depending on ambient temperatures. After driveoff, I kept the engine under 3,000 RPMs until engine oil temperatures reached operating range. This required no less than 15 minutes of continuous engine operation! Engine coolant temperatures required some 5-7 minutes before reaching operating range; oil pressure required some 7-10 minutes before responding normally.
