Mercedes Benz C230 Coupe
![Angry](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/icons/icon8.gif)
Hatch of my 2002 mercedes C230 Coupe wouldn't open with the smart key. I can open it using the matel key inside smart key. I just bought this car last week so I dont know whats going on.
I dont see any option from the drivers seat or on the dash to open the hatch from inside. Yes, the green emergency button from the back of the door work, but i want the hatch to open when the door are unlock with the smart key.
If anyone had the same problem and resolution? kindly let me know.
Thanks

Yeah, it's a common issue.
I posted on this....
you will need to search for it.
I posted docs and everything.
Just a matter of getting the hatch handle mechanism out and bending the
metal piece that contacts a switch a C hair.
Search under my username from around 2007-2009 time period.
Be glad you have an 02.
03 they deleted the keyhole on the hatch.
EDIT: Here's the thread.
https://mbworld.org/forums/c-class-w...wont-open.html
BTW- I found it by simply searching this forum and using the terms coupe hatch.
We used to say STFF around here a lot, but it's a kinder gentler MBworld these days. Ha.
Welcome to the forum. Another coupe owner? Awesome.
Post pics!!!!
Since you're a newb, you will need to invest in a set of torx bits, and inverted torx sockets +
at times you may encounter metric allen heads.
And of course you already own a metric socket set yes? And metric open end wrenches?
Other than that, you can do anything on these cars with standard tools.
You'll need the above to be able to do the repair mentioned. It's not hard.

Lol, I just always assumed the smart key button was for the sedans. I didn't know you could push a button to open the trunk, I just use the handle above the license plate. Honestly I hate cars where you have to press a button in the car to open the back, a good old fashioned handle is so convenient.
Welcome to the forums Aleekhan, GLW that fix.

I think what he's saying is the hatch latch handle isn't working.
It locks and unlocks with the smart key along with everything else.
You're thinking of 2 button vs 3 button.
But FYI, the 2 button smart key on the coupe is actually a 3 button inside
and you can just unlock just the hatch if you push so hard
where the button should be it makes your thumb get a blood blister, or replace the exterior of the fob.
But it doesn't pop up or anything, so kinda useless.

Oh, I thought he was saying the key wouldn't make it pop. My bad.
Also, my fob is a 3 button. But I had tried to press the pop button when I first got it and it didn't work, so I thought that it didn't work on the coupe. Didn't realize it just unlocked the hatch rather than open it.

Actually it would be useful it the hatch handle acts up.
2003 on has no keyhole as a cost cutting measure.
You have to crawl in the trunk and push the emergency button.
So if are able to access the 3rd button, you'd at least be able to
actuate the solenoid. Never thought of that before.

Mercedes Benz C230 Coupe
hatch door
Thanks a lot for your reply, and I am a new to mercedes-benz, am glad i have this forum to learn more about the features.
i went through the old postings of opening the hatch panel, before i plan to do that I have to mention another problem with the smart key.
the smart key work only from the short range from the small square on the door handle of both doors. If i am away even 2 yards from the car door and not directing the smart key towards the door handle(small square sensor) the doors wouldn't lock/unlock.
also, i have noticed that in the night(dark) the smart key range is a little better than in the day light. I dont know my explaination make sense or not, its so wierd. some time the smart key wouldn't lock/unlock the doors at all, and i have to use the matel key to lock/unlock.
I think there is some thing with the voltage, i dont know.
and the same issue with the hatch door aswell.
please help....

More likely your antenna amplifier is blown.
It's in the hatch.
Do you have tint?
Putting tint on the hatch glass with the hatch open
blows the amp from the water dripping on it and indirectly, your wallet.
I'm surprised your infrared sensors work.
They usually give out straight away.
Also, you do have to replace the batteries in the key.
Check the owners manual.
Have you done that yet?

Yes, I changed the batteries in smart key. I have a 2nd smart key and both have same problem. I don't think it's the smart key, because the red light flashes, and they work only when I bring it right infront of the door handle sensor receiver.
There is no tint on the back hatch glass.
Where is the antina/amp located in the hatch? Can I replace it?
Thanks.
