Catalytic Converter is Toast!
Hello all, my Rt. side aft catalytic converter is scrap! I removed the bad pipe and catalytic converter assembly from the car. I have been doing a lot of research on this forum regarding failed catalytic converters. I certainly do not want to pay MB $1200.00 for a new one and I don't want to install aftermarket junk in it either.
I am actually considering removing the material from within the bad converter and reinstalling. Has anyone tried this yet?
Thanks
Ken

Why would you not want to put "aftermarket junk" but consider running with hollow cats? You drive a Mercedes not a crappy Honda. I would say suck it up and either buy a new one from Mercedes or get a aftermarket cat welded on. If you can't afford that you should not have a Mercedes.

Since it's true, but it applies to all cars. If you don't have the dough, then shouldn't drive. Putting crap on it just makes things worst sometimes.

Out Of Control!!
I would try a Magnaflow before going down the OEM fix road. $200 and change; since they redesigned them several years ago, several people here have them without problem.
Trey, where's the Honda love?

I can afford to pay for OEM, I just don't think its worth it. I don't need the pipe and FWD cat. I have read on here where other folks who used after market cats were failing after 30K. I really don't want to have to do it again and waist my money. If I could just purchase the aft OEM cat with out the entire pipe assembly and FWD cat I would do it! Do you know if that is possible oh wise one!
And by the way, you have a great day.

FYI:155K on the clock. Owned since new.
Thanks again

Hey Phil, it starts off as a faint rattling sound then progresses louder as the inside of the cat separates from the housing. If you continue to drive the car at some point the piece inside the cat could block the exhaust and cause the engine to stall.
Thanks

That sucks it seams Mercedes cats either go forever or die early. I think it has a lot to do with how you drive the car (speed bumps). I have researched this a lot since my car has more miles then yours and this kind of thing is something to worry about since it is expensive. I found that I could get brand new oem cats on ebay a few months ago for $750 a side or go here http://www.partsgeek.com/catalog/200...converter.html and get some aftermarket ready to bolt on for under $600. The other option is to have some aftermarket ones welded on they have come a long way in the last few years and seem to now be reliable

I don't necessarily get the whole "you drive a Mercedes" argument. That's seems invalid when you consider it's like a $6000 car. So no, it isn't a crappy Honda. A crappy Honda would cost you a lot more.
