And I remember a product called Synthoil recommending something like 50,000 mile changes.

if Mr. Banville can provide documented proof that changing the oil/filter at 5k intervals is worse than 10k suggested by Mercedes..I'd like to see those test results.
I'll post them when you post the same that proves that changing the synthetic oil every 5K instead of the recommended 10K is "better"
Oh, and wouldn't put a lot of faith into the word of someone who feeds their family by selling you more engine oil than you really need

Can I jump in on the Mobil 1 milage issue.

I have done a lot of tests on Mobil 1 at various miles. Of course there is a difference between cars. One car with 3722 miles on Mobil 1 has lower extreme pressure properties (the oil additive package is more used up) then another car with Mobil 1 at 6000 miles. Using the Shell 4 Ball tester I show Mobil 1 10W30 new has a wear scare (larger is worse) of .0140, at 6000 miles it is .0173 and at 10,000 miles it is .0194. New mineal oils range from .0170 to .0200. These are an average of several cars.

No, Mobil 1 is not a blend. It is a polyalfaolafin (sp?). A good web site on oils in www.bobistheoilguy.com . Very informative.

you guys have to also remember that the c class has a capacity of nearly 9 quarts compared to other cars close to 4-5 quarts. That's a lot of oil! I got my first change done at 3000 and next coming up at 8k.

My thought on this: frequent oil/filter changes are less expensive than engines.
Frequent changing of your oil and filter when it is not required is both a waste of money and environmentally irresponsible. I am afraid that you are living in the past.
