2005 C230 Kompressor Fuel pump replacement.

Yesterday my car stopped running, it lost power and then quit. Turning over it would try to start (felt like fuel starvation). I had it towed to the local dealer, and the service manager said it was most likely the Crank Sensor based on the mileage (240K) and would be around $450.
Later they called me and stated that the fuel pump, and relay needed replacing at a cost of $1043. I consulted my local MB repair guy and he said they were way outta line, and he was bout 300-350 bucks cheaper and that the relay most likely did not need to be replaced but that is what the factory recommends.
My question is, do they have to drop the tank to do the repair? They are quoting 3 1/2 hours labor.
Is it worth having the car towed 50 miles (AAA will cover the towing) and have my guy do it? I would rather have the $$ go to my mechanic.
Don't mind pay for repairs (I love my car) but do not want to get reamed!!

I cant help a lot in this, but this year I had to replace the 2 fuel pumps of my 01 C200 kompressor. what they told me was that the pre facelift system was upgraded and changing one of the pumps, I had to replace the other one to have the all system working.

the fuel pumps are under the rear seat and yes, 3 hours labor seems the time acceptable to do that operation. the fuel pumps cost me about 300€ each on mercedes oficial dealer (in Portugal)

Recall Campaigns

Thanks, the dealer also indicated 3 recalls that need to be performed on the car. I know that 240K is a lot of miles but I commute 100 miles daily (all freeway) and the engine uses about 1 quart of oil every 8000 miles or so. I am hoping to squeeze a little more life out of this car. It still is a pleasure to drive and looks great.
So glad I chose it over a BMW 3 series!!
