Ahhh!! First ticket.

My C230K lost it's virginity Saturday night on I95S outside Philly. I was leaving the Wings LAX game and was a little frustrated after waiting in traffic for 15 minutes to get out of the parking lot so I went a little heavy on the pedal once I got on the highway. I had it up around 105 but luckily (well, actually unluckily) the officer only had me at 90.4. There are two frustrating parts about this...I -never- see cops around there and in April all of my points would have expired and I would have a clean license for the first time since I was 17.

Oh well...hopefully since it was out of state it won't get reported back to my insurance company. Any insurance experts know anything about that?

New Jersey and Delaware are both 'reciprocating' with PA, and share all motor vehicle and insurance information. I'm not sure about MD or VA....

Geoff -
Take that defensive driving class offered by AAA. it took of 5 points from my total..so i came down from 11 points to just 6... if you haven't taken it. i would check with the local DMV to see if taking that class will reduce your points....

Buy a good radar detector, works for me. Think it's a good investment if you want to go fast and save money.

I took the defensive driving class a few years ago...probably almost time for the refresher course which gets me an addt'l 5% off.

I have a radar detector but got sick of it beeping every time I passed a store with automatic doors so it's sitting in the bottom of a closet somewhere.

My Escort Passport 8500, in Auto Mode... would only false once on a 35 mile drive through central Orlando on the way to work.

I have since flipped it to City Mode/X-OFF (disabling X-Band which cops don't use around here) and now I get ZERO falsing. Even when driving around all the downtown stores, malls, etc. When it goes off, I know there's something serious up ahead.

Is radar detector a no brainer to use? I guess it takes some get use to and tuning. I have alway been thinking about getting one but not sure how reliable it is.

You just have to take it easy the first little bit and learn where the flase alarms come up at. Then you still cant drive like an idiot, but you can start increasing speed a little by little. When on interstate I usually sent it as sensitive as i can get it.

Just dealt with my sister's insurance based on her driving record. Here's what I learned.

If you get a speeding ticket in a state that has reciprocity with NJ, it doesn't matter how fast you were going. It will translate to a two-point ticket in NJ.

Insurance companies, however, are not satisfied with not knowing how fast you were actually going and DO keep information based on how fast you were going for purposes of "insurance points".

If anyone disputes this, I suppose I can scan in her NJDMV abstract along with the insurance report.

It's a tool. You learn how to use it to your advantage. The radar detector itself is pretty straightforward and effective. But you also have to learn to read the road. If you are a lone duck on a long highway and there's a policeman waiting with an instant-on gun, there's little help from the radar detector. However, if he hits cars in front of you first (up to 3-4 miles with a good detector) you will hear/see those brief uses and have ample warning to take appropriate action.
