Trunk Springs

My 2002 C 320 trunk would not open fully without manually pushing it up
beyond the resistance point. One night I bumped my head quite hard which
was very annoying. My dealer adjusted the springs to the maximum
setting but still no luck. They then ordered new springs which improved
the opening but the trunk still doesn't go all the way up every time I
would like to mount a triangle in the trunk but that would even make things
worse.
Have any of you had this problen and if so how did you get it solved?

I installed a trunk triangle and first adjusted the springs (L & R) myself to the max setting on both sides. Worked great. Look under the side panels yourself to make sure the springs are mounted in the third (rear-most) mounting hole on both sides. It is easy to move them by hand with the trunk all the way open.

I actually backed one side off one hole to ease closing. The lid still pops all the way open unassisted in the rain (NW worst case).

My C240 trunk pops open all the way. In fact, the owner's manual tells you to be sure of sufficient clearance because it will open all the way when unlocked.

What's a trunk triangle? My trunk does not pop open but now I think I'll adjust it.

Trunk triangle - look at the underside of you trunk lid. See the triangular shape in the liner? That is where the goverment mandated safety triangle mounts for cars in Germany. The recess in the liner looks lonely without the triangle.

What does this have to do with the springs?

Let's see. The German government mandates a safety triangle in the trunk, never to be seen, except for that rare occasion when you break down at night... but the German Government does not require side marker lights which serve a safety purpose every time they are used, every night? Go figure...

Revstriker... I suppose if you just gotta have your own triangle in the trunk, the added weight of the triangle may hamper the balancing in the trunk lift mechanism, necessitating a change in spring tension.

Thanks MB-BOB, I guess I wasn't thinking of it that way.

My trunk works fine and opens up all the way on it's own. In fact, it opens with a pretty good amount of force!

Once my trunk lid starts to rise, it goes to fully open without complaint. However, sometimes I'll punch the "Open trunk Lid" button on the remote and the trunk will release (you hear it do so), but the trunk lid just sits there without rising at all. Hardly any finger tip pressure is enough to get the lid to rise completely.

I'm thinking I need to put some Seal preservative on the turnk lid seals and then it will rise on it's own every time. I also want to inspect the mounting holes to see which of the three settings my trunk is set at.

I could mention it at my "A" service appointment?

Trunk Springs still not working

Mine still don't work. Would someone who has proper operating springs check to see where thet
are connected. I checked mine and they are at the maximum setting but
I noticed that in addition to the three positions for the rear connectionthere
are two possible connections at the front. Is it possible that the forward
most post is where they should be connected?
I have had my car into the dealer three times to fix this problem but now
feel I need outside help. Thanks for any assistance.
