Keep your eyes open. There are some gems out there. I found one and it has almost everything I want (including cloth ) power/heated seats but no moonroof (which apparently is a headache anyhow) It seems that the blue book value has gone up on these cars since I bought though. Like I said above KBB in fair cond was $4900 with no moonroof/leather and when I checked it again like a month ago to see how much it went down, it actually went up by over $1000, even with the increased milage. (Up to 71k now )

Good luck with the search! These cars really are a pleasure to drive, especially on the freeway. I took a 1500 mile round trip in mine in September and averaged 31.5 mpg

This is going to sound kind of stupid, but I think its a rear wheel drive thing. My dad has a 4 cylinder 2 wheel drive s-10 pickup and its good on the highway but sucks in the city and his Miata is the same way. I average 19-21 in the city (using 6th gear when I hit 40) and 31+ on the highway. If I recall correctly BMW advertises the new 3 series that gets 34mpg highway and like 21 city, which is another RWD car. It just seems that the city/highway spread is a lot more on RWD cars.

Yea its rediculous. I get 18-19.5 in the city. And since thats the majority of my driving. Thats what the cluster shows when I look at it. otherwise. Its amazing.. Must be a rwd thing. My moms bmw x3 is awd and the gas mileage is horrrrible. I can notice the difference in gas used in my car and hers, with going to the same place.

RWD-fwd will get better freeway mpg than AWD. All that extra drivetrain kills it. My H4 turbo AWD was the worse mpg car. Of course it had a lot of modifications but if I stayed out of boost I would get around 17. My car gets around 30. This pictures shows me cruising on the freeway. I just slowed down so thats why the speedo reads lower than 65.

Of course 2wd will always get better mileage than and awd/4wd but it seems that the spread between city and highway is always larger on rwd vs. fwd.
For example. My Jetta was rated at 24/31 5 speed and my wife's beetle is 23/29 auto. Our caravan is 18/24. The c230 is 19/29 6 speed and like I said above the BMW 3-series is being advertised with 21/34. So the rwd have a 10+ difference city/highway vs. a ~6 mpg difference on fwd.

Just an observation I've made over the years.

Question

Hey guys,

I need advice on buying a 2002-2003 M111 C coupe.
A friend of mine wants to buy one, the budget is about $5k give or take.

Have these in mind, in order of priority:

1) http://dallas.craigslist.org/ftw/cto/3766317976.html
127k miles, waterpump, MAF, brakes, trans service, have been done 'recently'

2) http://dallas.craigslist.org/ftw/cto/3792266348.html
150k miles, fading cluster, peeling clearcoat

3) http://houston.craigslist.org/cto/3780829452.html
160k miles

4) http://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/cto/3798665804.html
137k miles, AC inop, pano roof shade off track, etc.

What do you think about the cars, and what to look out for?
So far I figured: camshaft solenoid for potential oil leak, Behr vs. Valio radiator, maybe alternator sprag bearing (do they have these on 2002's ?)

Thanks, I appreciate your help!
