transfer case issues

I have a 2004 c240 4 matic with about 200,000 miles on it. I had a grinding in the front end when the wheels were turned left or right. I had both cv axles replaced, and it did not fix the problem. Now my mechanic is telling me the transfer is going out. Priced a new one its a couple of thousand dollars. I was looking for a used one but I need the correct part number can any one help me?

Before you start worrying about replacing the transfer case, have the fluid changed. On many 4 matics it is just their nature to cause all that noise and vibration/grinding. A fluid change usually fixes it. MB actually calls for what amounts to changing it, doing several S turns on a paved surface and immediately changing it again. All that ruckus is caused by a chattering of the friction discs inside the transfer case. My 07 4 matic has had 4 fluid changes and I only have 105k miles. By borrowing the use of a lift I did the last three myself. It took about 2 hours each time. It is not that difficult with a lift. I wouldn't try it on jacks. The service manager at the dealer who did the first one and the independent mechanic I now use both stated rather emphatically that they doubt the unit would ever fail but for whatever reason some of them are just prone to chattering after some time while most go forever without a sound. It uses MB transmission fluid and any good shop will print you the instructions on how to do the fluid change. Good luck.

I agree my 4matic had the same issue with the transfer case. I replaced the fluid and all was well.
