Why can't I rev past 4K in neutral?

Revving an engine in free state, with no load on it can damage it far more quickly than revving past redline under accelleration.
That limiter is there for a reason. Frankly, unless youre just trying to kill the clutch, 4K should be plenty- you launch a car at its torque peak, or just past it, to get the strongest launch. I think the M111 hits max torque just past 3K, but from 2500 to 4800RPM the engine is over 200ft-lbs.
