Love the M271 engine

Ok, I have my flame suit on. I own three vehicles.
My wife's 04 Acura TSX, 2.4, 6 speed manual, 04 Cadillac SRX V8, and an 06 Benz SLK280, 6 speed manual. Before the SLK I owned an 03 C230 Kompressor coupe, 6 speed manual.

Now, many people talk about how smooth six and eight cylinders are. Here is my observation.

C230K had the smoothest idle of the four cars. Good acceleration, did not sound trashy (smooth turbine like sound on hard acceleration). This car had been very reliable. I sold it with 160,000 miles and the original clutch, Alternator, etc. Very few repairs other than maintenance or warranty.

The SLK has the M272, 3.0 liter 6 cylinder. Idle is not as smooth as the Kompressor. The SLK handles beautifully, and I love this car. It just amazes me how the Kompressor holds up in comparison.

The Acura TSX as a very smooth idle. Solid acceleration, although the lack of torque means you have to get the rpms pretty high to get good acceleration. This engine also as a smooth sound on wot, but is a little more metallic sounding than the kompressor.

The Cadillac SRX, V8 does not idle as smoothly as either the Kompressor or the TSX. Now, put your foot to the floor and this thing hauls and sounds fantastic. The Northstar engine has very good torque and has a great gowl to the exhaust sound. The issue I have with this vehicle is that it is so heavy, AWD, that the auto transmission will constantly hunt when driving in the city. I guess I am just used to having the control over that with a manual tranny.

So, My observation is that the Kompressor, idles great, accelerates nicely and sounds good. Holds it's own against larger engines in my opinion. Of course it does not have the power of the 6 and 8 cylinder, but I think it was an excellent engine for what it is.
