Steering shaft boot at firewall ripped

My rubber steering shaft boot split after my car was being serviced (at the dealership) for front end work (bearings, new hub and brakes, I usually do this stuff myself but too cold to work during our winter months). Noticed that my car seem very noisy when I picked it up and sounds like a vacuum cleaner coming from behind the dash on the left side. When I took it back they diagnosed the problem as a split boot that lets the engine sounds come in at the firewall. Usually the supercharger is quiet but without this boot what a noise when you accelerate from inside which is neat at first but after a while the novelty wears off

There are some items that I expect to last the life of the car this being one of them, has anyone suffered a similar failure and attempted to fix this? The boot is only a $35 part but to get at it is a job and a half as the shaft has to be taken out so that the boot with bearing can get slipped on. Are there any creative makeshift repairs that anyone come up with other than duct taping the boot? Too bad there is not a split boot kit available Dealer quoted about 3-4 hours of labour

Its a bit hard not seeing the tear but you could purchase a flat piece of flexible soft rubber about 1/16 or 1/32 " thick & fashion it to size to fit . Buff up roughly the boot & rubber with emery so it will adhere , cover both sides with Bear contact adhesive , let partially dry as per instructions & place over tear.

If there is any hole left you could patch over it with black silicone.

Good luck .
