birdsh....

Here in NJ, it's starting to show signs of spring. Trees are starting to bud, womens skirts are getting shorter () and birds are...you guessed it....defacating.

I parked my car in my usual spot at work today....and they had a blast plastering my panarama roof. Amazingly, they didn't even come close the the rusty old Volvo or the Hyunai parked on either side of me.... This combined with an emergency drought alert (prohibiting car washing) really baked my biscuits.

Maybe birds also like Orion Blue?

Having lived in Detroit, North Carolina, and both southern & northern California, I have never heard of an emergency drought alert and the subsequent ban on washing cars. I guess I just haven't lived a part of the country that has had one of these, but that's just wrong and communist!

Just terrible!

I'd have to say you haven't been in SoCal long enough/at the right time(s). Been in San Diego county for very nearly all of my 42 years - have experienced water rationing (lawns watered on odd/even days, NO car washing at home, etc) twice.

No car washing periods in Northern California as well. As far as the birds missing the Hyundai and Volvo...maybe it was an upscale bird?

Guess not, I've only lived in California for the last seven years.

I have a very good solution for bird droppings that I believe works very well. Obviously you need to get the droppings off ASAP otherwise it starts to eat into the paint. However, don't just wipe it off either, or it will create a bigger mess (the impurities also risk scratching the paint). Carry a bottle of no salt selzter water in your car. What you do is remove the cap, place your thumb over the top, shake like mad, and then spray off the mess like you would with a hose. Also carry a small terry towel to clean up the water. When you get home, you might want to throughly clean the area and then reapply some wax. Is this overboard? I don't know, but it works.

Pwetty Birdies

Don't you think the affluent birds would pick a lesser can to poop on?

Maybe the birds were jealous BMW owners!

Don't hurt me, please!

I keep the spritz in the car

I have a bottle of Maguiars quick detailer that I keep in the car with a towel for just those special occasions. You really need to get it off of the paint as quickly as you can cause it will leave a nasty stain. I have two on an older car that went on about 2 years ago and are still visible from certain angles. They are annoying so keep something close so that you can remove them as soon as possible. good luck.

Here in Maryland, there are the beginnings of water conservation grumblings. We're supposed to get more rain this weekend, and I'm hoping for a couple inches at least to eat away at our 13" rainfall deficit. I don't want a car wash ban this summer!

My personal opinion is that using water for car washing is only one factor for a given household. When they ban car washing, they don't address other issues. In 1999, people were allowed to water gardens as long as they held the hose themselves, no sprinklers. My plants are well established and can withstand low water levels. Shouldn't I be able to use a modest amount of water to clean my car instead of watering bushes?

Tim, I think you're on to something. Of course there are fewer affluent birds to do the deed. But the BMW birds are so thick in my hood, I can throw a rock in the air at random and knock one out of the sky. Can't tell if they're girly birds like their terrestrial cousins, but my bet is they are!
