Retrofit Xenon and Comand on C240

Hey Guys,

I'm in the process of retrofitting the Comand in my c240 soon. I'll have some more detailed info on it later on. I have most of the bugs ironed out. What I wanted to know is it possible to retrofit the oem Xenon's on the c240. If I buy the xenon headlights with ballasts and bulbs, it that enough or do need something else. Also, has anyone retrofitted the seat heaters on the seats? I have done them on a Landrover and it's pretty straight forward. Is the wiring already there for the heaters or do I have to rig something up?

Ok guys, I've had a lot of questions on the COmand system and here is what I can tell you. The comand system is one of the eaiser systems to integrate in a car compaired to the BMW, and Audi. All the wires are already there but a small mod needs to be done. A new plug containing the wires for the CANBUS have to be made by splicing it off the radio harness. The wires are already there but you need to move them to a seperate plug. The plug can be obtained from MB. I'll have a part number shortly. THe second thing that you have to do is install a Antenna. There is a specific one for the MB since the plug on the back of the Comand unit is different. Third, you must get the system activated through the Star Computer at your MB dealer so it can be integrated with the Multifunction display also. That's it! If you have a cd changer, there is another small mod that needs to be done also. Otherwise, the cdrom can be used as a cd player. There are many Comand systems for sale on the german e-bay but there is a problem with these. Everything will work fine except the Radio. There is a certain range of frequencies that the europeans use and that we don't. I believe it's the earlier part of the fm stations 75-88mhz and something with the AM bands. Not too sure about this yet. As far as the seats are concerned, if you are familiar with upholstery work, it is fairly easy. I'll post some more details later

I am interested in retro fit COMAND too. Looking forward to your post in the future. I've seen your post on Megacomm, glad to know that you got all figured out ! I actually went and called several dealers in S.Cal, none of them confirmed that I can retro fit COMAND.
Got some question for you though........
1. Are you gonna get US COMAND or Euro one??
2. Do you know if we can connect aftermarket MD player or changers to COMAND should we successfully retro fit ??
3. No matter what spec of COMAND you retro fit, do you also plan to activate TV function??

When you are ready to retro-fit, can you also let me know? maybe we can have a group buy for COMAND? Thanx in advance for infos!

btw, my email is eugene1004@aol.com

I just found this info in the Audio and electronics forum saying that the NAV-TV is now has the services for adding the TV and DVD to the C class command system in US. Look for the details in the follow link.

https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...referrerid=331

Also, I called them to ask how much its cost. He said about $1800 with the DVD player. So, sound like its not a bad deal at all. What you guys think?

Ok guys, a few more answers.

The Comand System in Europe will work but you will lose out on the frequencies as mentioned above. The European comand system also has a button for TV but you have to install the TV module for it. The problems start here now. The european TV module is PAL and the US standard is NTSC so we can cancel that out. I have heard of a modified module that can use the audio part of the module as a set of inputs for those of you that want to add a MD player. I know that the TV cuts off when you exceed 5mph so I'm not sure if the sound will cut off also. Need to check this once again. I have not priced a US comand as of yet since I am out of the country most of the time so if anyone knows then please let me know. The German Comand units go for about a grand on ebay in Germany all the time.

How much does an aftermarket Comand cost?

And, newMBz, does that $1800 include the Comand system, or is that $1800 just for the DVD/TV part?

Thanks,

Tim

That "speed related" cut out function can be deprogrammed by the dealer. It does not cut out the sound in anycase.

There is also a module [mentioned on megacomm] that plugs into the Comand and similates the TV tuner control stuff, so you can plug a dvd player into that [it takes rgb+sync]. This needs a COMAND with a working TV button [one that says "no tv" on the screen if you press it]

Note, that cars built with COMAND [certainly the CLK] have different rear windscreens, on the COMAND rear windscreens one of the differences is that the TV aerials are present in the glass, I dont know if there are any other differences.

Also, I beleive that the actual h/w for US and EU comand is the same [I may be wrong] and that you could therefore have a dealer install the US software onto a EU comand, or the EU software on a US COMAND. Although the EU software is harder to come by, I beleive all US dealers have US s/w disks.

I have the part number for that connector you mention [and the shell and the metal elements], if you cant find them I can post the info.

Tim,
The $1800 is only for the DVD palyer and the TV. You must have a command system. Remember, its a modification on your existed command system. If you have any more questions, you can call there toll fee number.
Have a nice wekend.

Yes I am a Gujarati and acutally in Bangalore India at the moment. Shall be back soon though. The H/w of the EU and AMerican Comand is the same. The American Comand S/W can be installed on the EU with no problems but the tuner section will still have a problem since it is controlled by hardware. (this is what Megacomm told me when I called) Has anyone priced a Comand unit completely. I don't have the part numbers for the pins and socket on me now so Richard, if you could post them it would be great. As far as the antenna, yes certain models have them integrated in the rear glass. Adding TV to cars without this antenna can be done but an additional antenna has to be mounted on the glass similar to the Alpine.
