The most noticeable for mass air flow sensor failure is you will smell something like "walking into a dry cleaner smell" from your A/C. After a day or two, your "check engine" light will come on.

I've unplugged mine just to see and I can't tell the difference, the car runs fine, maybe not at it's peak. Plugged it back in, reset the code and it's good again. If this failed outa warranty you would be in for a $500-700 repair. If you are a DIY person you could get one at a wholesale parts dealer like Hoehn Mercedes for probably $350 and replace it yourself in about 5-7 minutes. The downside of not fixing it is probably poorer fuel mileage, reduced performance, inability to pass smog, reduced resale value.

Mine was replaced at 25k, no error message, but a code must have been set. Fuel milage improved noticable after replacement.
