Urgent! m271 Cam adjuster question! Video inside!
Hi
I have a w203 C180 Kompressor that has a few issues.
So I've had a rattle during Idle and bought a Timing Chain kit from Febi to replace it and remove the rattle.
Now that I've started my quest for less(no) engine rattle I noticed that the camshafts alignment was off by almost 10 degree (crank at TDC mark). Rotated the crank another time then it made a klicking noise, now both cams where rather precise at the TDC mark. Kept Rotating the crank a few times and got a pattern.
10 degree off TDC
next almost spot on TDC
then 10 degree off
(note that every time the alignment changed the adjuster was klicking)
Is it broken or just messed up by the timing chain???
Camshaft adjuster noise (keep an eye on the camshaft)
Then the rattle during Idle (note that the rattle is going away when given a little gass)
Please help! would be a shame get rid of it.. How much would a camshaft adjuster cost and where to buy?

HI Skelterize.
i have the same issue as you with the rattling below 2000rpm and disappears when reved above. What did you do to resolve this? I have Chain and sprockets replaced etc etc. and have crankcase pipes done.
Pleeeeze.

2000 C200 Kompressor
I just had a similar rattle on my M111 C200K, which also went away at high revs. The noise appeared to be coming from the timing chain/guides/tensioner/cams, but ended up being a very badly failed water pump bearing. The sound was resonating with the front and top cam/chain covers.
After taking the cam cover off and finding nothing wrong, a tube in the ear suggested the rattle coming from the water pump, then removing the belt confirmed the diagnosis. It was then a quick fix.
Graham.

c180 kompressor 2006 w203 271
m271 exhaust cam adjuster making a noise.
Hello,
I have had exactly the same happen to me on my c180 kompressor 2006. I have stripped my motor several times and I could not find the problem. I finally decided to go the extra mile and remove the cam shaft and take the exhaust cam adjuster off to see if that was the problem.
And yes, it was.
2 of the 4 flanges inside the cam adjuster have broken off and it will have to be replaced.
When I can I will post a pic of it.
I hope this helps.

M271 Cam Gear issues...
Hey Kevmister,
That is exactly how mine ended up as well!!
The darn E-cam gear lost its circlip that hold the spring that pushes the metal key that locks the gear into position. Caused the camshaft and gear to have a enormous play and the knocking actually cased it to break those 2 of the 4 arms.
The mystery is what actually caused it to lose that circlip in the first place?
Also before the engine fully died, it picked up this irritating "Whining sound" above 3000rpm...EVEN with me removing the serpentine belt it remained. Meaning that the sound is not water pump, alternator, supercharger or any other belt driven parts.
This is my biggest mystery and i have not repaired the vehicle as yet!
Any ideas? anyone?
