im sure it does hurt the engine. the only time that happened to me is when me and my gf got into a fight and she pulled my key out when i was at a stop light!! b*tch....

What it can do is cause additional wear inside the transmission, but only if you made a repeated habit of this [which is why I asked about the seriousness of this question in the first place]. Even this risk is minimal, because the electronics don't let you restart until you've put the transmission in neutral or Park, which is just neutral with the parking pawl engaged on the output shaft.

hey does it do any harm if u switch off the engine without putting car into "P"? and leave it in D and step on the brake.
How does an automatic transmission manage the clutch with the brake? or is their a typical 'clutch' in an automatic transmission?
you can't pull the key out unless the gear is in park and the engine is off. your gf must have a quick hand.
Is she still your gf?
