Not especially...since you can't restart the engine without putting it in Park or neutral. Is this a rhetorical question?

Keys

May be you can turn your car off in "drive" and leave your keys in the ignition.......so anyone can get in, put it neutral, and drive off in it.....

By definition, this kind of action cannot "hurt the engine". [Think about it a little, eh?] The engine is either on or off.

What it can do is cause additional wear inside the transmission, but only if you made a repeated habit of this [which is why I asked about the seriousness of this question in the first place]. Even this risk is minimal, because the electronics don't let you restart until you've put the transmission in neutral or Park, which is just neutral with the parking pawl engaged on the output shaft.

Wouldn't the electronic automatic transmission be smart enough to have engaged the 'clutch' with such heavy braking that turning off the ignition would be similar to driving a manual and turning off the ignition while in gear with the clutch depressed?

How does an automatic transmission manage the clutch with the brake? or is their a typical 'clutch' in an automatic transmission?

Automatic transmissions don't have clutches as you think of them. I'm not sure if modern automatics have them at all. The old Chevy Powerglide had clucth packs.

you can't pull the key out unless the gear is in park and the engine is off. your gf must have a quick hand. Is she still your gf?
