carlsson or amg rims? 17 or 18?

Hi! i need ur opinions!

I plan on having either 18" Carlsson 1/5 (5spoke) wheels or 17" AMG Doublespokes (ala C32). Which should i get???? Both cost almost d same, and tires cost almost d same too given that AMG uses wider rear wheels.

BTW, to those with 18" rims, what tire size and rim offset do u use??????? Thanks.

I personally like the AMG double spoke and put them on my C320.

I've heard they'll be avail in 18 very soon.

..........just picked up my right front wheel from the shop after my wife grinded it into a curb.....aaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

have you considered brabus as well? I personally think they make the best looking rims.

while the carlsson wheels are beautiful looking on the coupe, its a shame they are so heavy. The 1/5s are like 31 lbs, the 1/6s 34 or 35 lbs. wait for the AMG's in 18" or get some u/l 1/16s from carlsson (similiar look, better performance)

Scratch everything i said if you want the wheels just for show, go for it, the coupe with carlsson wheels is SOOO amazing looking.

these are 1/6s but just look at the way they fit the coupe:

BTW: that is not my coupe, i found that on the web some time ago, never found out who owns that one.

I think a good question to ask yourself first before making any decision is: "why do I want to spend that extra $2K & change the wheels?" If its because of the look, I wouldnt even consider the 17" split spoke, too small and a waste of money. Change it to something more unique like Brabus & Carlsson or even the 18" split spoke. The 17" is too common. After a while you will think its too small and want to change it again. Even a 3.2TL comes with 17" wheels nowadays. And I think putting some extra weight shall not be a factor, you are not going to race with a C32 anyways.
But if your answer to the question is: "I just think the 17" split spoke is the coolest wheel on earth". Then go ahead and change it, afterall, its yr car! We are only here to share our experiences and give you a different point of view.

yeah ive been thinkin about d costs too.....especially that i hve to import these wheels, as they r not available in my country (if they r, they r also super expensive here---better to source it in Hongkong).

i hve only two brand options....carlsson & amgs, brabus looks too fancy for me...just lke those on some civics here....but they also look good (but i dnt want it to b mistaken as a locally made wheel). Im also considering Lorinser...I want my wheels in 17 or 18max, cz im also concerned about d ride, and im nt doing it for speed cz we drive very slow over here, its for looks cz wen my IS200 w/original 17s, sit beside my C, my 16" 7spoke wheel looks terrible!

i like d split spokes, but they seem small on pics bcoz of thick outer lips, havent seen one in person yet, anyway, these wheels wont b common in my place as they r very few MBs in my province, in fact, im d only C240 in my city....LOL (im not in Manila)

BTW, ive seen 18 split spokes on the new 03 CLK, but d design isnt exactly identical to d C32s.

if performance isnt an issue, and looks are your primary concern, go with the carlssons. they look fantastic on any MB

Bruno:

If you go with 18's here is what AMG recommends:

Front: 8.0 x 18 ET 31 225/40 18
Rear: 9.0 x 18 ET 35 255/35 18

The AMG split spoke's are nice for 17's. I also like the Carlsson 1/6 and love the AMG Aero II monoblocks. Same wheels as E55. They look awesome on the C.

get 19's. Lil Romeo has chrome dubs on his c coupe. the kid can't even drive yet. but if you're hung up between 17's and 18's, go for the latter.

I bought the C32 wheels with Michelins after only seeing them in pictures. When I put them on my car, I was disappointed at how regular they looked. I kept them for about 10,000 miles, then sold them and put on 18". The ride is a tiny bit rougher in your seat-of-the-pants, a bit more in the steering wheel. But it looks much better. All the input I read about 19" seemed to say it is too rough and too delicate around potholes, etc. I thought I really wanted the 18" 1/6, but when I saw them in person on another's car, I was not in love. So I instead bought some 18" AMG type wheels (real ones not available for the car in 18") and I'm very happy with the look. A pic of my car is in the sticky gallery.

well reading frm ur posts, 17AMGs r off my list. brabus n lorinser r off too. So im left with the 18"Carlssons....either 1/5 or 1/6 "EVO" (greg230 pic above) diamond editions. I was quoted US$1,650 per set for both wheel types. is d price fair??? (its f.o.b philippines already)

So which is which?????? 1/5 or 1/6Evos???????????

But im still partially in love with the amgC32rims, but they look small. How i wish i can afford two sets...ehehehe

BTW, i havent seen Carlssons, do these wheels look good in person? do they look as well made as AMGs????

i really like the c32 AMG wheels - double spokes... and they're on sale from wheelexperts... if i didn't have the C7 wheels, i'd have gotten those.

i didn't like them in the pics, tirerack's site but when i saw it on a c32, it convinced me. i wish they had 18"ers.

you know what though? i don't think they would look good w/ the dinky little brakes that my car has... (well, dinky compared to the porsche that parks next to me ... and the c32)

these are 1/16s in Diamond, they are also available in Ultra lights (no idea when though)

this is the 2/6 brilliant, personally i love em, but they weigh a ton

these are the 2/5s,in brilliants... they look AWESOME in person.

the 2 denotes a two piece wheel, on the 1/6 1/5 and 1/16 the outer rim is all one piece, instead of 2

We have good taste Young! So far 1/5 is my first choice in 18s.

The only problem with the 1/5 is that it looks almost d same as the upcoming 03 E Class Avantgarde wheels w/c are 17 inchers.

Ultralights=ultra hard to clean, and ultra expensive for my Peso.

I guess the Ultralight wont be available anytime within the next month or so, I've been asking that since last Sept. And yes, I heard that it has a price tag of a two-piece wheel. The C32 double spoke does have 18" (which is the standard wheel they put on the new W209 CLK55). But I guess you wont be seeing that in production until this time next yr!!
Go for the Carlsson 1/5, I remember I saw a member's pic who has a Silver C-class with Carlsson 1/5. You might want to search through the pic thread & take a look before you make yr decision. Because of its simple design, 1/5 can look alike many wheels out there: the new E-class wheels, Brabus Mnoblock IV, etc. But a Carlsson is a Carlsson. You cant go wrong with it. 1/5 is the way to go!!!!
Good luck!!!

I'd also go with the 1/5 or 2/5. I may even sell my split-spoke wheels soon to pick up a set. Check out the Tire Rack web site; they've got a few pics of the 2/5's on a C coupe.

Also, are two-piece wheels more susceptible to damage when driving on rough streets (pot holes, bumps, etc.)???

daez nutz has 18" 2/5s on a dropped 320 i think, and his car is AWESOME looking.

the 1/5s are nice, but i think the 2/5s are a little more unique, same with the 1/6 and 2/6 but again 33 lbs a wheel is a lotta weight.

The U/ls are like 16-20lbs a wheel, but i hear they are around 800 smackers each.... thats like riding on 4-5 grand or approximately 20% of your total cars cost.

I will most likely b ordering Carlsson 1/5s in 18"x8" front and rear, using 225/40R18 tires.......is there a possibility it will rub? need fender rolling? or spacers??? please help. thanks.

i want wheels that i simply bolt on and go...no modifications to d car. not even spacers

Just remember you'll get the Carlsson 1/5 DIAMOND EDITION!!!! The original 1/5 has an offset of ET28 and I think it's been discontinued. A spacer MIGHT be needed. The Diamond Edition has an offset of ET35 which will be a direct bolt on to yr car. If you're not dropping the car, you should have no problem with the rubbing issue.
Some members have suggested about the 2/5s. I had 2/5 Brilliant Edition on my C32 for a few months but IMO, I think they look too small. Because of its design, the lip is a bit too "thick", the spokes are actually 16". The 1/5 will look bigger with the spokes stretched right to the edge.
