Steering wheel

Hi guys,
I need to replace my steering wheel (CL203 2002) that is in realy bad condition.
How should I proceed?
Mechanicaly, I believe that under the MB logo I'll find a big bolt, as it is on any car.
I believe I should put my wheels strait and take key out to have the column blocked.
But as there is the air bag, should I disconnect (-) on the batt?
I'm a bit afraid after reading all the problems linked to batt disconnect...
Should I go into "maintenance mode" before disconnect or will it have no impact?

Thanks for your help,
Julien

Someone here posted up a very good DIY here about doing the steering wheel, and how to work with the airbag. Should be able to find it with a good search. Good luck.

The W203 version does not have pictures anymore, but it's pretty much the same.
No need to disconnect the battery, but make sure the key is nowhere near the ignition!

He just meant to keep it as far away as necessary to ensure that you're not paranoid about it somehow going in the ignition. But I'd suggest that if you have someone with you, have them put it in their pocket.

Old habits die hard, and you might just out of habit stick it in if it's on your person or near you, and you don't want that.

By the way, as I'm looking for my parts at the junk yard, what if I find a steering wheel from second series (2004-2008) instead of first (2000-2004)?
Will it fit?
Wirings and connectors are the same?

I needed a breaker bar to get the 10mm bolt out. Having a helper to hold the wheel helps as well as you are not supposed to let the steering lock hold the wheel (I think it might break it).

Here is the video I used. I found it very helpful.
