2005 C240 4matic - what to look out for?

Hey there, all! I am brand new to this forum, and I am looking at a 2005 C240 4matic, 2005, with about 140K miles on it. I love the look of the car, and it drives great. It is currently up on the lift at my mechanic getting a thorough checkout, too. I thought I would post here on the advice of a friend just to see if anyone can give a pointer of "make sure you check out THIS" or the like.

The biggest thing we can see so far with the car is that the passenger side interior door handle has broken off. I assume that needs to be repaired under the panel, but my husband is pretty handy and I assume can manage that. (or can someone tell me otherwise)

Thoughts? Thanks!

Welcome to the forum
Yes, to replace the handle the door panel needs to come off. There is a DIY writeup on the forum, so it's doable.

I don't know if the 4matic has different transmission arrangement, but have them disconnect the electrical plug on the front right side of transmission pan and check for oil leaks in there.

The engine is supposed to be bullet-proof.

I bet they will find some boots, bellows, bushings torn on the front - the rubber gets old and brittle with age, so that's expected.

Should be a very reliable car for you as VVF said it will probably have a bushing or two that needs replacing but the engine and transmission should be fine. One thing I would make sure gets done is a transmission fluid change and differentials. Do the trans every 39k and it will go for a very long time. Also see if it has been done before as if it hasn't been serviced at least one yet I would personally walk away.

check inside the coolant bottle to see if there's oil in it. And stick a dipstick down the tranny tube and see what the tranny oil looks like.

Hi Trichickie,

I hope this info was helfpful for your decision. I was thinking more would chime in. Good luck with the car if you decide to go for it.
