NO Start W203, dead can bus

I have a friend's 2001 MB c240 that i am trying to help him with. the car will not start and here are what i know of it so far. I am a very capable mechanic and do all my own car work (tho not familiar with MB)

The car seems to exhibit the symptoms associated with a water damaged ECU, but with a few twists.

  • when attempted to start the car nothing happens, no click of solenoid, nothing.
  • the dash lights up as normal.
  • the key is recognized but wont start the car
  • when the key is turned to ACC position the cooling fan runs on "low" and not continuously but in spurts. short spurts.
  • i have a handheld obd code reader and can read some MB modules and all the accessible modules complain about no communication with the ECU, and of dead canbus.
  • but the kicker is that there is NO evidence of any water damage to ecu plugs none whatsoever, all the connector's look as clean and shinny and they should.
  • the ecu does not rattle.
With all that said i am of course leaning towards a dead ecu but am reaching out in the event these symptoms sound familiar to anyone with a less expensive possible cause.

All the best

Thank you
