Unhappy shifter boots and knobs came off?

I just picked up my C230K Friday, like it very much!! Nothing to complain about. But something just freaked me out. For those of you who has MT, when you shift to reverse, u have to pull the knob a little, rite? When I pulled it, the knob and the boot came out too?!! I know i didn't break it...it just fell off. So I just want to know if it is ok? Anyone experienced this before??

That is always a surprise, it’s not broken there is a ring at the bottom of the shift knob inside the boot that turns to lock it in place. It sounds like yours was not locked down.

See Garage
Yep. Just put the knob on the shaft, pull the boot up just enough that you can see the conical tightening ring, turn the ring clockwise (as viewed from the top) as far as it will go, then pull the boot down and snap into place at the console bezel.

The knob fits pretty tightly without locking, so I can see how one of the factory folks placed it on the shaft and forgot to lock it in place. German car manufacturers are human, just like the rest of us.

Mine was not locked!

Thanks for the info on the lock ring! When I first brought the c230k home, I pulled up too hard and my shifter popped loose. I just pushed it back on to reinstall and from then on, I eased up when reversing so that would not pop off again. Based on your post, I checked my lock ring today and found that I could turn it clockwise (looking down on it) to lock it in place. So mine came from the factory unlocked.
