C230 Sport - Transmission taken apart. Put back together ok?

I've got a 2007 C230 Sport 90k nice car. Car wouldn't come out of first gear. I've come to the knowledge that the shifter needs to be programmed or replaced and programmed. Shifter has been replaced (but not programmed). A mechanic suggested I replace a part on the valve body, so we have taken that off the transmission. The valve body has some light surface rust on it. One mechanic has suggested that I can not put the transmission back together and program it. The local Mercedes dealer doesn't see issue with using a light sand paper on the valve body, then them putting the trans back together, programming and being good to go. Thoughts? I'm confused on what route to take.

If you feel comfortable taking some sandpaper to the valve, that should probably work. If not, replace the valve body for a few bucks and have peace of mind.

I've heard that the valve body is married to the transmission / computer?
