engine belt shred into pieces
just this afternoon while driving out of town, my car's poly v belt (or wat u call alternator, fan, engine belt) "SHREDDED" into pieces, and i had to have my car towed back to the city. In all d years that ived been driving this is the first time i have to have my car towed.
i think it started with a tick tick sound a few months back...and while i asked the mb mechanic about it, he replied "nahhh...must only b dirt on the pulleys" w/c i also believed until today

When the salesman and I were test-driving an '89 260E [a new one], funny noises were emanating from the engine [a persistent whine]; I immediately hung a u-turn and returned to the dealership [the salesman was largely unconcerned]. Opening the hood revealed that the poly drive belt was in the process of being made into rubber linguini - shards everywhere, with just a thread left on the pulley. Turned out to be a slightly misaligned pulley - my prime suspect in your case, as well.
[Yes, we bought an '89 E, but another car, needless to say...]
