The ending mechanic gave me a line about some type of PVC hose underneath the intake manifold and they claim it's preventing the supercharger from kicking in. My problem is I don't know if the supercharger is kicking in. Is there a way to test this myself?

It's a common problem with these engines, there was a recall out on the part if I remember. Call mercedes benz and give them your VIN and see if there are any recalls left on the car.
