Hi!

I need to replace the head gasket on my 2005 C230K coupe with an M271 engine and supercharger. The car and engine were built before December 2014.

I also want a new head.


From online, it seems like the cylinder head with valves for my car is listed as A2710107001.
But, I see that there are also listed newer A2710107101, A2710107201 cylinder heads.

Is there a benefit to going with one of the newer cylinder heads?
Will they fit?

I know I can get the head built. However, it's not worth my time or the risk. Unless someone is a professional engine builder, then there's no way to really know how good of a job the shop does on any shop work. One of my degrees is in Mechanical Engineering (also Computer, and Electrical. Fwiw, the tri-degree is not that uncommon), so I'm familiar with shop work, tolerances, etc. I've also fully rebuilt, by myself, 6+ engines. And, I've been and engineer and working on cars for over 20 years.

I can get a new head with valves from Germany for ~~$1,500 (includes shipping). Imho, that's a small delta cost verses a rebuilt head. Especially when compared to the total amount I'm spending on the maintenance/restoration replacements (~$4K+ - MB Timing chain, new Bosch alternator, Kleemann header/cat, Magnaflow secondary cat, primary & secondary O2 sensors, fuel injectors, MB cam/crank sensors, MB water pump, tensioner, belt, $12 hose and other hoses, spark plugs & new filters, supercharger pulley, HID headlights, etc, etc,).
The brakes, rims, and tires come next year.

That helps to confirm that I have identified the correct parts.


Based on the length of production, it seems like the newer A2710107201 head may be better. However, that engine combo wasn't offered in the US. So, it's hard to get/verify the needed associated parts - like the lifters and rocker arms.

So, it seems like it is best to play it safe, and go with the same version head.
