Hello, from a newbie.
Just happened to be in the right place at the right time to pick up a 1 owner 2002 c230k with less than 71K on the clock. At less than trade in value according to NADA.
It does have several issue that I need to work through but I'm in no hurry and I'm not that concerned if they work or not as long as it will be reliable transportation for the wife to get back and forth to work.
Known issues so far:
A little about me...
To say I'm a DIY'r is a bit of an understatement. I've always done all my own service and repairs (unless) under warranty. To tear it down to the frame and back isn't a problem.
I work as an industrial electrical mechanic. The title on my PAF is "Electrical Mechanical Technical Specialist". Fancy way of saying if anything goes wrong I get the blame.
I grew up tinkering with dirt bikes, boats, old cars we'd race in the pastures or fire roads. As I got a little older jet skis, street bikes all types of autos, tractors... etc.
The one thing I can say for sure. It will save you a lot of time and effort to listen to someone who's been there done that. Looking around here there seems to be a bunch of folks that have tons and tons of knowledge about these cars. Thanks to all of you that share that knowledge with others!
In time, as I learn more about these cars maybe I can be of help to some others too.

Known issues so far:
- Sunroof won't open. Shade does but not the glass. (back shade came loose and snapped open when figuring out the overhead switch operation.) Makes no noise or movement at all. Was hoping for the washer / spacer fix I found a thread about.
- Dash / odometer display won't scroll through the windows and is very dim in the corners.
- Steering wheel controls don't work and the horn does work. Found a thread about soldering the connectors on the PCB board in the steering wheel. Will give a look when I have time.
- The gear shift location emblem fell off the stick shift... ... I'll re-glue that this evening when she gets home.

Welcome to the Forum. Great to have someone with as much lifelong experience as you do. I'm sure you'll be contributing to the DIY area for the W203 really soon !!

Any pics? What color? Leather or cloth?
Mind saying what you paid? Also update your profile to say where you're located. It helps alot when trying to answer people's question.
So, re: sunroof, there's a long thread on that, username davedrb or something like that. Very likely the motor is disconnected, or maybe they pulled the fuse to prevent it from opening. Be careful on this one, it's a real mess to get it to close if the gears etc. are stripped.
It can be fixed, but not an easy fix, and when the thread is located, you'll see all the docs and the narrative from Dave, who took his apart DIY and fixed it.
And or PM me an email address, and I'll send you a zip file with every
doc related to the sunroof since I'm the guy who supplied the docs to Dave.
Not sure if Mercedes still sells the repair DVD's but i highly recommend trying to get one. You order direct from 1800Mercedes for like 60 bucks.
2. Yes, the buttons are attached to the airbag, and I you can just ht it with a soldering iron t resolve the cold solder issues.
I did. Also resolved the horn not working when I pushed on a certain angle.
You need to remove the airbag, then remove the switches and repair.
2 screw on the back of the steering wheel, torx.
Then the connectors for the airbag, you pop up the plastic snaps on the connectors, and then pry them up.
Dim MFD is a problem on these cars, but it can be replaced easily.
You need to locate a new one, likely on ebay. Long thread on that one somewhere, there was a group buy at one point and a lot of people replaced them. Go for the german made one, not the Chinese.

3. See #2.
EVERYTHING on this car requires torx and inverted torx sockets, so invest in both.
Post pics!!! Welcome!

Cloth,... Sport, pretty sure it's the base model, but for $1500 & 71k... I should be able to get enough miles out of it to justify the purchase.
