Changed fuel pump, big problem in fuel tank now

Hello everyone,

I'm new here and my English is not perfect. So I'll try to explain as much as I could do. I had a fuel pump and my car had a bad "fuel" smell. I took it to a mechanic who saw that my fuel pump is leaking fuel and I saw that too. So he removed it and put another one.

Everything worked after that, but after a day, my car stopped in the middle of the road. It appeared it needed fuel, but the fuel gauge was giving me "half fuel available". I put 10 liters of fuel and it worked again.

I took it to the mechanic and we found that one bag of the fuel cell is full of fuel and the other one is empty. So my car doesn't use the fuel there, but it uses the fuel in the other bag (the fuel cell has 2 bags).

So now, my fuel gauge show me it's half full which is right, but my car stops because the second bag is empty. I have to always make my car full now in order not to stop it.

What could be the reason? this is really frustrating.

Thanks a lot.

Edit: my car is Mercedes C230 Kompressor 2003.

There are 2 tanks under the rear seat.
On the right side is the fuel tank, which contains the pump.
The other side has the "fuel sending unit" or something like that.
It pumps fuel from the left tank to the right tank.
So either he didn't put it together correctly, or you need a new sending unit,
the thing in the left tank or whatever it's called.

Sounds like the return tube was not pulled over the center hump back to the fuel pumps.

Fuel pump --> filter sender unit --> fuel rail and to fuel pump side of tank (via return tube(s))

Attachment is for a W211 E55 but similar return. Item "C" is the one I am referring to.
