Stuck in Neutral

Stuck in Neutral
Here is a puzzle I can't find the answer to:
c230 2006 4door sedan
car turns on, no codes.
the shifter moves normal but the car acts like it's in neutral. let's say I put it in reverse or drive and the car sits like it's in neutral. The car doesn't go anywhere, it is stuck in neutral. I can put it in park.
I've checked the fuses, again, no codes.
Any ideas on narrowing down the cause? Anyone heard of this happening?

I had an issue where the rod from the shifter cam disconnected from the rod to the transmission. I was able to get under the car and reach in the tunnel where the shifter rod comes down and reconnect the end through the hole in the rod going to the transmission. There should be a C clip to hold the rod in the hole.

i found the shifter bushing under the car so seems that is the culprit.
question - can you easily reach by hand and get to the shifter rod to connect/plug it back into the rod that connects to the trans??? i saw a video on youtube for this repair on a w202 and the guy (mercedes medic) says you can only reach the shifter bushing/rod area by using an extension custom tool is that correct??
really appreciate any feedback on this!!!

I had to jack the car up to get underneath but it is easy to reach with your hand and re-connect. I had to do this to get the car home. The connection is in the tunnel directly below the shifter.

Tim - much appreciated! i saw this video on youtube for a w202 shifter bushing replace and they guy makes it seem like nearly impossible to get to the bushing on the rod due to the narrow space. but sounds like the w203 may be slighly more space clearance to get this job done?

I didn't have to replace the bushing -- just the clip. It took a pair of pliers and patience but I got it on. I can't comment on the bushing but maybe that is what you need the tool for.

Yes, I think you need a special tool to change the bushing. About a year ago I had a vibration noise from under the shift knob. My indie used some special tool to change the bushing at the connecting rod and the noise went away.

Thanks shan and tim-p
i am gonna put my c32 up on jacks and see if the shifter bushing is still in the shift linkage or if it degraded and broke apart. i have the part #15 in the diagram here "shifter bushing" which inserts in to the bushing that fills the circular slot in the shifter linkage. to get that plastic piece to squeeze into the shifter linkage slot i read you do need that special tool in order to get enough levergage in the narrow space to push it in... ?? gonna try it

I replace the same pieces and my Transmission is in Neutral, only move the shifter not the transmission.
So do you have good news for this situation?
