M111 Engine Not Starting Properly

Hi Everyone,

First off, I'm new to this MBWorld and and been checking in a few times for a couple of issues.

I recently bought a 2001 C200K 6 months ago. I didn't know much about cars back then and the guy who sold it to me ripped me off. The car wasn't in a good shape but it wasn't that bad as well, at least that's what i thought when i bought it.

1. I changed the AC pump. Air con wasn't working and blowing hot air.
2. There's a rattle like sound near the cam shaft adjustor in the engine block at start up (when the car starts to move) if you don't throttle enough.
3. Changed front suspension.
4. Need to change rear suspension as well.
5. Compressor is going bad.
6. Starter is slow..but i can live with that for now.

Right now, i'm having yet another issue. At times the engine won't start properly and causes loss of power when driving.
It's easy to distinguish when this happens. When the engine starts, it will stall a bit but won't go off. I can drive the car but there's still power loss.

No error on the dashboard.

My mechanic says that it's probably the compressor dying.

I've already paid a small fortune to my mechanic for that car and i don't know how much longer i will be able to afford doing so.

I would very much appreciate if any of you could help me fix any of these issues listed above.

Thanks.

Update: Apparently the ignition coil is faulty.

C230 Sport Coup + 2006 W164 ML350 + 99 Ford Escort (What the heck, it gets 38 mpg!)
Search for "Learning in recirculating air flap" or recirulation something like that.
You need to sync it. It regulates the SC output.
Car is a dog if it's not sync'd or is going bad.

i would be worried by the rattle sound at start up. ask your mechanic for at least a visual inspection of the timing chain, sprockets and so on. the fact that you don't have errors on the display doesn't mean much.look for a MB Stardiagnostics tool.

Thanks. I'll look into that.
Is it something that can be easily done?

I AM...but the mechanic says it's nothing to worry about.

I already did, he doesn't seem to care much about it. I wish i knew a bit more about mechanic, i'd do it myself.

Thanks.

I finally fixed the rattle sound. It was the belt tensioner damper and the noise was gone.

Ok, so i recently had another misadventure. My radiator exploded while i was driving.
I had it fixed yesterday by a new mechanic and ask him to check the above issues.
I fixed the rattle sound by changing the belt tensioner damper.
I learnt that the slow starter is due to a timing chain problem. It needs to be sync or something but it can be fixed.

I'm still struggling with the power loss for now but i'm positive about it.

Will update soon..

Ok! So my recent misadventure and the reason the engine was not starting properly + loss of power, were both due to a head gasket leak.
I changed the belt, 3/4 pulleys, water pump, thermostat, belt tensioner AND the pulley (both were bad, causing that annoying rattle sound)
I'm still struggling with the slow start though. Timing chain was synced but didn't help.

Sweenney D24,
My car c200 kompressor made in 2002 year. like your car, it started in the morning making rattle sound for few minutes, but when the engine running warmer the rattle sound gone away.
I would like to learn from you how to solve the problem.
Thank you very much.

Hi Chanyat123,

I'm afraid we have different issues here.
Mine was due to a bad tensioner pulley bearing causing the pulley to actually dig into the tensioner and eventually causing the tensioner to shake.

I first replaced the tensioner damper which reduced the noise for a small amount of time.
