Coolant leak, cap needs replacing?
The coolant leaks once every few months. While filling it up, I noticed this. Please refer to picture below. Is it coolant leak? What is that part, sensor? I see the hose on the bottom but even if that hose leak, I don't see how it could cause something like this.
On the other hand, does the plastic coolant cap needs to be replaced eventually? The car has 120K miles.

Yes it is leaking. Perhaps under pressure when driving, the coolant is shooting up from there and it's why there's all that green stuff. I am thinking of cutting 1/4 " of hose off and reattach it. I think that hose would be at least $40.

Ok that's the "Auxiliary coolant pump" with the dried coolant residue on it, it has two hoses on the bottom. It might be that coolant return hose.
I don't see any residue coming from the cap.

Actually, that's the pump for running the heat when the engine is off.
"Residual Engine Heat Utilization."
If you push the 3rd button from the left bottom row
on the climate control panel, labelled REST/EC
with the engine off, it will blow hot air into the cab on low
fan speed, and this pump circulates the coolant into the heater core only when
this feature is in use.
It's a pretty cool feature, most people don't know about.
The only downside is with the engine off, it will likely fog your windows.
But it will keep you warm in cold weather for like 1/2 hour with the engine off, if the engine is hot.
BTW- EC stands for Economy and pushing it with the engine on turns OFF the AC.
Odd eh? Most cars you have to turn ON the AC, and on this one you it runs constantly unless you turn it off.
You can bypass that pump completely if you want. Probably never used the feature I just described.
It pays to read the manual. So many subliminal features on these cars.
