Help me decide
I got the car really cheap, and it is a very straight, really nice driving car with 150k.
The motor, not so much. The valves are badly carboned up on the driver's side bank, more specifically cylinder number five, that all the compression is being blown out into the intake. I am weighing whether to fix this motor, or just buy a used motor and swap it.
I could pull the motor apart, have the heads gone through and put it back together, but my worry is that the number 5 cylinder rings are gone. That cylinder had zero compression, and leakdown test shows it's coming out through the valve, but the cylinder is also oily. I am afraid to spend all the time fixing the heads to find that the rings on number 5 are shot too. Not to mention that it is probably gonna take a few weeks working on it a few hours at a time to get it together, where I could swap the motor in a day, maybe two.
Motors go for anywhere from 1200 to 2000 bucks, and even after all that I would end up with 3200 to 4000 in the car.
What would you guys do?
