Looking at a 2007 C280 4matic
https://kansascity.craigslist.org/ct...474143543.html
Highlights from the phone conversation with the owner
- 2nd Owner. Car was purchases as a CPO and has been owned for 7.5 years and 65K miles by this owner.
- Has maintenance records available for me to review
- Said last major service was done at 65K (its probably due for something)
- Painted a picture of regular service (oil etc.) I'll let the the records tell the real tale.
- Was serviced last on 12/12/17 (oil, coolant and some other stuff)
- No damage history, no repainting history
- Garage kept
- No rust
- Selling because he has purchased another vehicle and no longer needs this one.
- Talking pretty firm on price. Said more than once that he's not in a rush to sell.
Number one concern for me is the balance shaft issues with the M272, but the engine's serial number looks to be in the clear:
From the TSB: Applicable Models (Not Applicable to Model 164.156, 204 or 216.386): Equipped with M272 Engine Up to Serial No. 2729..30 468993 or M273 Engine Up to Serial No. 2739..30 088611.
From the various VIN Checkers for this car:
- VIN WDBRF92H87F931008
- Model Year 2007
- Model C 280 4MATIC
- Engine 272941 30 586977
- Transmission 722690 06 826587
So I'm feeling pretty good about the engine being in the safe zone. But am I playing with fire looking at this engine even though the TSB indicates that this one has a balance shaft sprocket made from improved material?
I'd appreciate any thoughts on the car, price and motor? Thanks.
PG
The way I read the Balance Shaft TSB, you should be in the clear (i.e. not affected). In the first post I quoted the portion of the TSB covered the applicability. I think this motor was built after they made changes to the balance shaft.
If it was me (and was two weeks ago), I’d still consider the car as a potential.
